Why are you Protestant?

Because it is. IF you are truly a Bible Christian then you would believe the Bible. The belief that it is INDEED the Body and Blood of Christ is in the Bible. As a matter of fact, it is Christ who said so. But then of course, you only pick those words of Christ that suit you.
you are entitled to your opinion and/or belief
And that you do not beliefve it has no bearing on its truth or falsity.
same applies to you in all due respect
Much you know about Cathoicism. At communion the words are " The Body of Christ".
thank you for the correction, not your attitude
He is not allowed to take the host if he is not Catholic.
thank you for comfirming what a priest said to me before my wedding, stated on previous post
BTW, "born again’ is a recent evangelical construct that started only the in the 1960s.
Jesus never said we must be “born again”.
He didn’t???

well I guess you never read the whol book of John.
Jesus made sure Nicodemus understood this so He said it twice.

John 3
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
3In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again
4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit** gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ’You must be born again.'**
We are learning something new every day, do not feel bad I never knew this when I was Catholic either.
I pushed away anyone who claimed they were born again christian until I began to understand one’s beliefs due to the fact she was one of my wife’s bridesmaids who the priest refused to give communion
God bless,

you are entitled to your opinion and/or belief
It is not just my belief. It is the belief of His Church for 2000 years.
same applies to you in all due respect
Completely agree. Except that I do not make up my own belief. I follow the Church that Jesus established.
thank you for the correction, not your attitude
Touche! Apologies for the attitude.
He didn’t???

well I guess you never read the whol book of John.
Jesus made sure Nicodemus understood this so He said it twice.

John 3
And here is John 3:1-16. Notice it is Nicodemus who says “born again” because he misunderstood Jesus. Jesus said " born from above".
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2
2 He came to Jesus at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he?” 5 Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you, 'You must be born from above.’ 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can this happen?” 10Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? 11Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. 12If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” 16For God so loved the world that he gave 7 his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
We are learning something new every day, do not feel bad I never knew this when I was Catholic either.
I don’t feel bad. I know this because I am Catholic.:).
I pushed away anyone who claimed they were born again christian until I began to understand one’s beliefs due to the fact she was one of my wife’s bridesmaids who the priest refused to give communion
I never pushed away “born again” Christians. I tried to enlighten them in so far as they will try to listen to reason.

But they were used to Catholics being push overs when it came to scripture. They didn’t like it when someone actrually had a come back.🙂

You dont seem to understand WHY the bridesmaid was not allowed to recieve communion. It is because of the belief. We believe it is truly Jesus in that bread and wine (becoming the body of Christ) you yourself have said you do not believe it. So why would you want to recieve it?
The same goes for Catholics who attend a Protestant service, we are not supposed to recieve their communion.

I dont see why you are offended about this, mainly because why would you want to eat or do something you do not believe in??

as benedictus said in 75, anyone who is not catholic (i.e. born again) in not allowed to take the host.

this statement comfirms why the priest at my wedding refused to serve communion to a born again christian in the wedding party.
Are you being intentionally dense?

Catholics don’t allow non Catholics to take the Eucharist for their own Good:

1 Cor 11
27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

All Catholics are born again. However, unlike Protestants, we don’t believe that this one time experience guarantees eternal life.

I’m toning down my extracurricular activities until things settle down for me in production/business world, but will continue to babysit this thread I started and try to smooth things over when necessary. Overall, I’m liking the content, loathing the delivery of it in too many posts, we must step back and watch how we word things carefully as to not make the statements turn into attacks against churches or individuals, of which is going on in too many of them right now. Just please, take note of how you are saying things, the same content can be delivered and will fall upon receptive ears if it’s worded right, otherwise it falls on deaf ears and tempers flair, causing no-one to learn in the process.

Along born again, born from above, a new creation in Christ, etc. It’s a term that has not been defined in this thread yet, not really, and requires some clarification. I’ll share some personal revelation with you guys that should shed some light on the matter. Around two decades ago, I asked my priest, I asked several other ministers, pastors, people in and out of the Catholic and Protestant church, how do you become born again. I never got a clear answer out of any of them, it was left largely to myself to discover on my own, thus my quest began with this and to really get the bottom of my own faith, within my church, as well as the protestant denominations in order to deepen my spiritual understanding and relationship with God.

It is only this year I discovered what it is meant, and boy, what an eye opener, I so wish this could be formulated into a system others could plug and play in, in order to experience what I now experience, but alas, it’s an individual thing. I kept hearing people talk about their personal relationship with Jesus, that feeling of Joy God imparts with ones self, and try as I may, they seemed to be entirely wordplay, people simply making a statement in order to fit into the status quo and I don’t really want to look to the numbers of them that are doing just that regardless. The defining moment is where my prayer life turned towards a very simple prayer, “God, reveal to me your love”, he did so through the outside, with people, signs, circumstances, clearly showing that he’s answering, yet, I wanted to really feel his love and peace, so the prayer changed to “God allow me to feel your love inside my heart” and from there, “God allow my heart to love you, give me the capacity to do so”.

The result was rather quick, I was given a short, breif glimps of it right after communion on day, just to show me what is to come, and the feeling was very strong, I say feeling loosely, it was something I’ve never experienced before and that’s the best word to describe it, yet there was something so much more going on. The following days, something changed inside of me, as I kept and still continue to say those prayers, he’s showing his presence within my heart, kind of like a welling up, from within, and it is warm, gentle, and peaceful. I know I would be overwhelmed if he revealed this in full at once, so I think he’s just letting it build inside, fast enough for me to notice, slow enough for me to handle it. The new creation within me is absolutely against this world and what it stands for, it is alien to it, and the two simply do not mix at all. The ways of the world were fading away from me before, now, it’s quite clear, the world itself with it’s ways are poison to my being, that this new creation, this born from above, this born again person, is not the same as the one that was born into this world of the flesh. I also notice a brand new freedom, one where I no longer am a slave to my old way of thinking, and when I face adversity, I keep going back to what is written “He that is in you is greater then he that is in the world”, now you can only say that and mean it and understand it if indeed, “He” is in you, and this is where you have to be honest with yourself. Have you changed from within, or are you trying to do it from without?

This is not to say I will not stumble, but noticing a really cool side effect, it seems God also gives us additional means to obey his commands and to keep yourself separated from the world when it’s trying it’s best to lure you back to it’s ways, which means no longer having the white knuckle it so much anymore. Another neat side effect, when you keep your focus on him, placing your own needs secondary, he will give you perks, giving you your hearts desire, for he knows it better then you do. The only draw back here though, the evil one will kick and scream against you and throw things your way, just to get you to revert, for he knows he has completely lost his grip of you, so plan upon facing additional adversity, especially during these early days of transformation.

Now, that tangent to the side, the bulk of the posts I’m seeing boil down to this. You believe this way because this is all you have been exposed to, that you have not studied other denominations including the Catholic faith, and this boils down to only one statement. I’m x religion because I am afraid to test what I know against another, because my mind is so closed and my faith so weak, no other beliefs which challenge my own have any place in my mind, and I will continue to go through life with blinders on, and this statement is made for all sides of what is now a debate. There is a reason Catholic priests study all of the major religions, I rarely see protestant pastors doing the same. My own journey did cover most of these religions, in and out of Christianity, which is why I can empathise with those of other faiths, even those that oppose Christianity itself. What this does is make me more effective in spreading the gospel, for I can see a person for who they are, relate to what they believe at present, and show them areas of our faith that in some ways, are similar, in other ways, totally liberating, which in turn gives it more appeal rather then just giving them a condemning lecture, which in the end, lets me plant seeds, and in many cases, for the very first times in their lives.

I like how on an earlier post, where they mention that both Baptists and Catholics are equal. In her world, they are, and for now, in her situation, they literally are for her and there is nothing wrong with that opinion at all. I’m sure eventually she’ll pick sides, but for now, with her level of understanding and growth, that is perfectly fine of a statement to make. In the end regardless, we are going to the same heaven, we worship the same God, we just do so in a different manner, and this welling up inside I so wish to share with all of the posters here, is the same as with what we as Catholics want to share, yet often, it’s being approached in the wrong way.

Anyway, peace be with you all my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Brian

Exhibit Z of what I was trying to get at in my first item 😃
This thread is about why some are Protestants. Please stay on topic. This is not a thread of “Thoughts of benedictus” if you feel compeled to tell the rest of the world your thoughts please start your own thread and stop trying to hijack this one.

Brian I bet you feel more in common with the Protestants that have gone through the same spritual experience that you have than Catholics who have not.

That’s a personal attack, please avoid these if at all possible. She already stated that her view is only showing what the Catholic church believes, they aren’t her opinions, and just FYI, I invited her here to share her knowledge with us about it.

Actually, neither are the case. The protestants are much more vocal about it, the Catholics, I see it in their face, same experience, different ways of expressing it. If I were forced to pick sides, I would not, but this type of stuff has me thinking of the Saints and apostles with new light.

It is not a personal attack. I took you at your word in the OP that you were asking Protestants why they were. I did not read over all the posts on this thread so maybe you ammended it. Her comments are most cetainly off topic from your OP.

Well, the original topic is, Why are you protestant. When the reply is “because it’s not Catholic” or I have an issue with the Catholic church and this is why, of course there will be people that have to either correct, or clarify what the Catholic church really believes. Saying nothing only reinforces a flawed understanding, so it’s going to be necessary to speak up when what is stated is misguided.

An example being with the imagry. How many readers here, that initially thought of these images as being idols, now understand it’s nothing of the sort what so ever?

That is not what I saw. I was drawn in by your initial post but see that it is not unlike many of the other threads here therfore I will jump into your last comment with 2 feet.

When a Buddhist lights incence before a statue of Buddha does that Buddhist believe that statue is God? is Buddha? or a representation of Buddha?

No, they do not believe the statue is Buddha. The idol reference originates to the Pagans and those that created images to worship the image itself, as if it was it’s own entity, same context as the golden calf.

Hmmm as far as I know the Anglican church broke from the Catholic Church because Henry VIII wanted a divorce (an Anglican friend of mine, yes, Anglican, said that his Chruch started because the Kind wanted to commit a sin).

You may have kept all 7 sacraments but it is also at the Lambeth conference in 1930 where contraception was first allowed and every other denomination followed there after EXCEPT the Catholic Church which held on to the truth whch all Christian Churches have have held for 2000 years.

And this is the beginning of the end… now you have women priests and bishopes, actively homosexual priests and bishops.

I would not be surprised if down the track they started officiating at gay marriages.

I hear a comment that when Rowan Williams was asked why he allowed the ordination of actively gay priests, he responded " We voted fof this on 1930".
Benedictus2 you have some valid points on Anglicanism of which I am part of but you need clarification on a few things.

Yes Henry VIII was a despot and most Anglicans I know would rather he’d been fed poison mushrooms early in his reign. Be that as it may, great and good things–mainly the missionary work done later on–helped spread Christianity to many parts of the world and transformed lives that continue to this day–especially so in Africa.

I agree what happened at Lambeth in 1930 opened the door to contraception and abortion. Not a proud moment for the Anglican Church. When it comes to contraception, polls show Catholics use it a same rate as protestants in spite of the official postion of the Church. In fact, when Humana Vitae came out, many outspoken priests–like Fr. Richard McBrien–snubbed his nose at Paul VI and encouraged Catholics to just IGNORE.

As far as active gay priests and bishops, you have them too. Do you want me to name names? A unrepentant retired bishop comes to mind. You know the guy from Milwaukee who just came out with a book condoning homosexual behavior in the priesthood?

The Episcopal church has or is in the process of coming up with marriage rites for same-same blessings/marriage, so you are right on this one.

Rowan Williams needs to grow a spine. He continues to disappoint the Orthodox thinkers in Anglicanism. He knows where the money is coming from…The Episcopal Church in the US.

I’m a convert from Protestantism to Catholicism. I can tell you why I used to be Protestant. I used to be Protestant because that is how I was raised. I can also tell you why I am Catholic. I am Catholic because the Holy Spirit went fishing and got me hook, line, and sinker! :D:thumbsup:

Ah, the truth finally rings out. An honest answer to an honest question has to be subject to bashing. Henry didn’t seek a divorce. He was seeking an annulment. Nice way to try and discredit him. Enough has been done by your church to discredit itself before and after the Reformation. It’s a shame that folks like me in here have to go back into defense mode.

The Anglican Communion does not condone or support homosexual unions. This is your ignorance of other faiths ringing true. Better stick with Catholic theology my friend because your attempt at Anglican theology just flat out flopped.

In a Wisconsin Evangelical Synod Lutheran church, a Roman Catholic would not be allowed to receive communion regardless of how you felt about it.

Okie dokie, I’ll give it a shot. The way I see your question you are asking why I’m an Episcopalian. The only way I know to answer this question is to tell you what I love about the Episcopal Church. I love the inclusiveness of our denomination. Our Eucharist is open to all Baptized Christians. Our teaching is open to new ideas and all are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings. We have two rites in our services. Rite One is the in the beautiful traditional language. Rite Two is in the contemporary language. Both rites are so beautiful in their own way and I love them both. I love our music. I love the traditional hymns and I love the contemporary hymns. I love going to the communion rail with my daughter and grandsons. I love the people in my particular church.

To answer your question, prodicalson12, I love my church because it fits me better than any other I’ve ever been to. It’s where I am fed. I hope that helps.

Benedictus2 you have some valid points on Anglicanism of which I am part of but you need clarification on a few things.

If Henry VIII had not separated, the missionary work would still have been accomplished, all under the One Body of Christ. The Catholic Church was and still is at the forefront of missionary work.
I agree what happened at Lambeth in 1930 opened the door to contraception and abortion. Not a proud moment for the Anglican Church. When it comes to contraception, polls show Catholics use it a same rate as protestants in spite of the official postion of the Church.
Whether some Catholics use it is beside the point. The point is the Church held on to the truth.

Let me put it this way. Just because some people steal does not make it okay to declare stealing acceptable. What is sinful is sinful even if the entire world decided to commit that sin.

Law (in this case doctrine) is an educator. Once something that is morally evil is declared permissible then general public will tend to think it is morally okay.

My friend resons that abortion must be morally okay becuase it is legal.
In fact, when Humana Vitae came out, many outspoken priests–like Fr. Richard McBrien–snubbed his nose at Paul VI and encouraged Catholics to just IGNORE.
Whether Fr McBrien snubbed his nose at Pope Paul VI is immaterial. What is in question here is truth. God is the arbiter fo morality not Richard McBrien.
As far as active gay priests and bishops, you have them too. Do you want me to name names? A unrepentant retired bishop comes to mind. You know the guy from Milwaukee who just came out with a book condoning homosexual behavior in the priesthood?
Same argument as the one I made for contraception. There are gay priests and bishops in the Catholic Church. But the Church always maintained that the homosexual act is against the God and is intrinsically evil. That some priests and bishops practice this does nto mean it is the teaching of the church.

The Anglican Church on the other hand is basically saying that the homosexual act is now no longer evil but quite morally good.
The Episcopal church has or is in the process of coming up with marriage rites for same-same blessings/marriage, so you are right on this one.
Which just goes to show that Rowan Williams was right. All the evils that are now morally acceptable to the Anglican Church was a natural projection by allowing contraception.

What most people don’t realize is that when you allow the nose of the camel into the tent, the rest of the camel will follow because it is a one piece camel.
Rowan Williams needs to grow a spine. He continues to disappoint the Orthodox thinkers in Anglicanism. He knows where the money is coming from…The Episcopal Church in the US.
No comment on this one.

Ah, the truth finally rings out. An honest answer to an honest question has to be subject to bashing.
Care to point out which part of my post is “bashing”? I think this is more a case of the truth hurting.
Also you brought this on by posting the following:
Justy 90: "I’m not just a Protestant of any kind. I’m of the church who has kept sacred the 7 Sacrements which date all the way back to the Apostles and who was the church who attempted to keep all of what was good, wholesome and proper in tradition while screening out what was not useful, excessive and not appropriate for Christian worship."
Henry didn’t seek a divorce. He was seeking an annulment. Nice way to try and discredit him.
Yes. And when he did not get an annulment he decided to break up the Body of Christ like a child in a tantrum.
Enough has been done by your church to discredit itself before and after the Reformation. It’s a shame that folks like me in here have to go back into defense mode.
That is true. There is and was much to change about the practices of members of the Catholic Church. But that was no reason to chop it into pieces.

St Augustine wrote something like: The Body of Christ may be bleeding, putrid and covered with sores, but that is no reason to chop it up into pieces.
The Anglican Communion does not condone or support homosexual unions.
HHmmm, you must take that up with Elgar who posted otherwise. See his post above. He is Anglican.

The Anglican communion (or at least maybe some branches of it does condone homosexual union) or else they will not ordain openly active homosexual men.
This is your ignorance of other faiths ringing true.
True, I am probably ignorant about a lot of other things relating to the Anglican Church but not on the subjects that I addressed above.
Better stick with Catholic theology my friend because your attempt at Anglican theology just flat out flopped.
When necessary I do.
