Why are you Protestant?

I was thinking about why are Protestants the denomination they are? And then why are they not Catholic?

I am a convert, and while my mom is Protestant (Nazarene) I was agnostic up until college. I was 21 when I met my future wife, who is a cradle Catholic. I converted to Catholicism because it seems to be the religion that Christ founded.

I saw from the other thread that some of the problems stem from the fact that you use the KJV of the Bible which says things differently from Catholic Bibles. I posted stuff in the other thread, but how do you know your translation is correct and the Catholic version is wrong?

Be careful. I was a UMC seminarian before I came here to CAF and now I’m Catholic! Though still at the UMC seminary. But then again before I came to seminary I called myself a Metho-anglo-catholic, so I guess I did not have that far to go.

I was raised in the Baptist faith, including the church’s Baby Dedication, Sunday School, asking Christ to be my Savior and subsequent Baptism as a public profession of faith, participating in Royal Ambassadors, youth group, college group…

I am learning about other denominations and the CC especially, ever since beginning to date my wife back in 2006. It began partly as a way to convert her to my Baptist faith, admittedly. I wanted to teach her what her Church really teaches (because of her weak faith as a cradle Catholic) and prove it wrong. What I uncovered was how many myths and misunderstandings my family and fellow Baptists held about the CC. I do still disagree with some doctrines and beliefs while I am still reading up on them. Not sure what the future has in store for me regarding my faith. I will keep reading, keep asking, and keep attending Baptist service and Mass (sans Communion).

Likewise, I too have discovered the myths and misunderstandings. I am currently in a Congregationalist church, being raised Episcopal. Through a schism at a local Christian school, whereby all Catholics left, I learned much of what was being taught by local pastors re the CC. I investigated and have yet to find one true statement of theirs. I don’t doubt their personal integrity, but there are people who are manufacturing lies concerning the CC. It is making me question the very underpinnings of Luther’s initial break with the church.

I don’t call myself a protestant or a non-catholic. I call myself a Christian.​

I prefer not to answer why I’m not a catholic. I am not anti-catholic but my reasons my be misunderstood.

Honored. But it can be argued that the Pope is a man-God figure, and that’s what 666 is, man over God. Which is a major reason I am hesitant about joining a Catholic church.

Also, I heard that the Roman Catholic church was established after the death of the followers of the original Christianity. Fulfilling the prophecy that the beast’s kingdom would be built on the death of the saints.

ahem… What? Seriously? Not sure how to take this one, I kindof hope its a joke, considering how incredibly charitable you have always been, and how kindly this… incredible statement… was worded.

The pope is not a man-god. There is but one God in three divine persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The numerology thing is a load of fooey. I can, through numerology make MY name add to 666, your name add up to Queen Elizabeth, and pretty much anyones name mean anything I desire.

And the Roman Catholic Church was founded on Peter at the Pentecost and remains unchanged. Not later, founded on the death of the saints.

There are many reasons to dislike the Church (historically and currently) and there are many reasons to be uncomfortable in the Church, but there are no reasons to leave/not accept the Church either historically or currently. We are as you once were and how can yesterdays orthodoxy be todays heresy? A truth is a truth forever.

I don’t know that, but I hope that the KJV is the right version because I like that version of The Bible the best.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on Catholicism, and so far I haven’t really found anything about Catholicism that would make me want to leave the UMC.

At my school they have mass and i have never felt the presence of God move in mass. I have never felt the Holy spirt in there. To me its all rules and tradition. But where is the love. When im at my own church people are happy to be in the house of the lord. We can openly praise God (lifting our hands, or even doin a dance). Not only that but the beleifs and the way the church is run. The bible tells us who we our to govern our church so there is no need for all the extra man made rules. Also i dont agree with confession. How can you go to another earthly sinful person to forgive you for your sins. You need to to to God with that. Also praying to saints. That idolatry. The word clearly states if you you want to get to the Father you must got through me (Jesus). And the bible that is used by Catholics has books that werent divinly inspired, which leads to contradiction. And in church (mass) the prayer isnt from the heart. mWhen you pray you are talking to God. God wants a relationship, so make it personal. I feel like your just reading him a script.

Well said. I strongly agree with the parts that I have put in bold.

Obviously many Catholics will disagree and say they do feel the presence of the Lord, especially during Adoration. Rules are what God gave Moses and Jesus gave the Apostles. Tradition is extremely important as it preserves what was taught by Jesus to the Apostles which they handed on to their disciples.

As for being happy at church, with people singing and dancing, any church can do that. Their are plenty of Protestant church’s that have very uplifting services. But is that God doing that or the music and energy of the people? I go to Church to praise God and receive His Body and Blood, not to get a happy feeling (although I usually do leave Church feeling happier, but that is not why I go).

Not sure what man made rules you are referring to. If you could be more specific I am sure those rules could be shown to not be man made, but God made.

Also i dont agree with confession. How can you go to another earthly sinful person to forgive you for your sins. You need to to to God with that.

And I wouldn’t do it, except the Bible says to. Jesus told his Apostles in Matt 18 “the sins you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven”

The prayers are from Jesus. Catholics say the “Our Father” every Mass, along with other prayers. They may not feel personal because the same prayers are used, but that also helps the parishioners recite the prayer with everyone. I would hope that people also use personal prayer and talk to God as well. After I receive Holy Communion, I go back to my seat, kneel, and pray to God in my own words. What ever is on my mind, or if nothing is I just contemplate the love that God has for us.
