Why aren't all popes automatically made saints when they die?

It seems to me that every pope, being the Vicar of Christ, is a saint, and should be recognized as such after they pass on. I mean, I think we all know that God has specially selected each one to lead His church. This shows that they are dedicated Christians. Why then aren’t they all named Saints?
 
Hi NJ,

Not all popes are canonized because not all popes have lived holy lives. Some were down right scoundrels. We have been fortunate to have had some very holy popes in recent times. What is important to remember, is that even during the reigns of the bad popes, the Holy Spirit guarded the Church from teaching error.
