Why aren't more theologians excommunicated?

I believe this is because of the idea of trying to bring them back to orthodoxy in a friendly way.

I believe this is a mistake as we all too often give too much credit of sincerity and honesty to dissenters and people who aren’t faithful. It is almost unfortunate but natural for good Catholics to attribute to others the same desire for good and honesty.

We need to get real though and look at it not that dissenters are honest people who have a real beef with Catholicism but people who are denying truth. No one can do that honestly or with a clear concience so there is some other reason behind it.
Just talk to a dissenter a little bit, usually there is some deep emotion behind this, which isn’t bad as many of us do things for emotional reasons and you need to try and connect to them on that level. But sometimes it is something evil, sin that is causing this and this is where Catholics make the biggest mistake.

We think the (sinning)person who is dissenting is honest and just wants a better Church, where in reality they want to prove how wrong the Church is to make them feel better about their own sinful desires. We don’t look at that these days and just try and open our heart to these people, who unfortunately will never open their heart back.

They want the Church to be wrong, to be proven wrong and to change to accept them. They do not want confession, celibacy, orthodoxy. They want an open Church where belief is open to whim and desire instead of changing themselves they want God to change for them.

We cannot excommunicate them as they will toe the line (lie and blame to avoid this) to keep more influence, yet discipline makes them martyrs, which is what they want. It is a very difficult situation that their Bishops are stuck in.

Bring too much publicity they could get more power, ignore them and wait till they die out is a more common tactic. This shows a trust in Christs promise but is extremely hard on the people today.

I am not sure of the solution as I prefer hard discipline, but society has been made too PC these days and discipline is not in style. We have too many wimpy Priests and Bishops, heck we have too many wimpy lay men and women out there who just go with the flow.
We need more people willing to stand up for truth and only now are people starting to stand up. It sometimes takes a lot of attacks on the Church for people to finally stand up for it.

There is my theory on why these dissenters enjoy the freedom they have.

While Augustine did much to build up the Roman Church, he also taught and wrote a few things about pre-destination that we don’t talk about today. McBrien write a column in our diocesan weekly which in my opinion is not theology, but sociological comment on the politics rife in today’s Church. A priest friend of mine said that McBrien’s specialty is Ecclesiology and that when he gets outside his field he often does not know what he is talking about. It seems to me that the Vatican doesn’t come down on many Theologians unless they go to a great effort to deny the Vatican’s current “hot button”. Maybe McBrien is small enough potatoes that he is not even on their radar. If it wasn’t for their football team, who would ever have heard of a Catholic mid-western university in South Bend, known also as former home of the Studebaker…

Possibly because there is no “errant teaching” here, nor any “Catholic teaching” being refuted. Frankly, I’d be a lot more concerned if you got the ear of any of my school students or my own children, if I had any.
++ But, hey, what the heck, why not excommunicate all theologians anyway 😉 😉 😉 ?
