Why aren't there any Catholic bookstores?

When I go to try and find Catholic books out in public, I can’t find any? There are bookstores, but the bookstores are all evangelical in nature or Protestant books. Why do Protestants have a monopoly on public bookstores? How are Catholics to learn more about their faith, when the church doesn’t sell their literature to the public?
What part of the country do you live in? There are at least five Catholic bookstores within a 20 mile radius of my house. I live in an area that is traditionally Catholic.

Good question. Last weekend I went by a location where there had been a Catholic book store for years, it was closed. Maybe it’s because you can buy Catholic books at B-Dalton, Barnes & Noble, EWTN and Catholic Answers, just to mention a few locations. Although it’s easier to shop via the internet, I’ve always enjoyed going inside a Catholic book store. I still go to the little book shops at our parish and the abbey.

There are 3 nice Catholic stores close by.I support all three, rather then buying online. I also shop at the stores run by missions and churches. 🙂

I also have 3 good Catholic book stores within an easy drive. The closest is about 3 miles from my house.

In Colorado Springs, there’s a Catholic bookstore in both of the major malls called “All things Catholic.” The south store is right next store to a Catholic Chapel in the Mall run by the Capuchin monks!!

There’s also another downtown called “The Fountain” and one more up north called “Aquinas and More.” I guess we’re lucky.

You can buy online from Aquinas and More, here:

There may be no Catholic radio in my part of NY but every couple of miles there are good Catholic stores that carry plenty of books…thank God!

There’s a great little shop with everything you could possibly want at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois, just outside of St. Louis, MO. It’s a neat little store. They’ve got a ton of nativity set stuff if you’re into the Fontanini sets. (I think that’s how you spell it. My sister has a bunch.)

Personally, I get my books from Borders or Barnes and Noble here in my town. Their Catholic sections aren’t too bad actually.

Wow. I feel lucky! There is a company here in the Dakotas, Hurley’s Religious Goods that is very CAtholic! they have stores in Fargo, ND and Sioux FAlls, SD and there is also a Catholic book store in Fargo, Holy Family book and gifts.

I am about eqi-distant between sioux falls and fargo, so i have been to all the locations.

We have three in our area. Two are great ones, and one no so great. The two I shop at are Halos and Top Hats in Mauriceville, TX and Holy Family Gifts in Bridge City, TX. There is another shop called the Living Word located in Nederland, TX that has an ad in our Catholic paper but they carry Jack Chick tracts so they will NOT get any of my business anymore

ADDENDUM:

Church Goods - Religious Articles - Clergy Apparell - Catholic Books

Catholic Bibles (they carry the leather bound hardcover: Loretto Press Douay-Rheims version) - Rare & used Catholic Books

around here, there are few and far between… the culture of Death is overtaking the region and Catholicsm is being more and more looked down upon by people. That is why there are few…very sad

Although Catholics are the largest denomination in the US, they represent less than 25% of all Christians. So out of the gate, the Protestant market is 3X the size of the Catholic market. That’s a pretty big advantage.

Now factor in that many Protestant denoms put a significant emphasis on reading the Bible and walking the walk. Much more so than in many Catholic parishes. The real market advantage that a Protestant store has over a Catholic store might very well be 5X-10X.

There are several quality Catholic stores on-line. Don’t forget that Catholic Answers has one at:

I don’t know if these are the stores you are talking about, but in Denver, I’m aware of the following two stores:

Holy Family Books & Gifts
Address: 6690 Wadsworth Blvd # A, Arvada, CO 80003
Phone: (303) 423-9395

Gerkens Religious Supplies
Address: 1175 Santa Fe Dr, Denver, CO 80204
Phone: (303) 534-8233

I prefer the latter for books and gifts. Gerkens specializes in church supplies. The former is closer to me and I like some of the wall art they carry. I didn’t realize they had a web site.

I only suggest these because I had a hard time finding Catholic bookstores as well and would love to keep these stores in business.
There is also House of Carmel 5455 W 38th Ave # H
Wheat Ridge, CO
