Why artificial birth contol is wrong

First of all, a common fallacy that is spread is that Catholics are taught not to enjoy sex.

In 1960, the FDA approved The Pill. By 1968, the use of The Pill had spread to the point where Pope Paul VI issued Humanae Vitae on the regulation of births. The other fallacy is that the Church’s celibate leadership has no, or little, concept of human sexuality.

Human sexuality must – must – be used responsibly. It is designed to produce children. It is not meant to be used as a plaything. In the 1950s, the Playboy Philosophy encouraged casual and frequent sex acts and these articles were surrounded by other articles that identified the magazine as high brow, although its primary selling point was pictures of naked people.

Today, casual sex is common. Love is divorced from the act. Should the act produce a child accidentally, the man disappears as a contributing factor and the woman becomes a free agent who is able to decide to get rid of her problem. Problem is, she did not get pregnant by herself.

Pope Paul VI told men that they would be tempted by ABC, that if they did not restrain themselves they would regard the love of their life less, and there would be more promiscuity. All this has come to pass.

Treating sex irresponsibly, and devoid of love, leads to options that include death for the unborn child. The reason given for most abortions is contraceptive failure. Sometimes, the man tells the woman he will leave her if she doesn’t abort. This is not just a case of choice, coercion can enter into it.

Add to that, easy divorce, and we now have a hook-up culture. Movies that once showed love and romance, now show the man and woman hopping into the sack and becoming a couple, only to find out later that they are with the biggest jerk/loser on the planet.

Dating used to be about looking around, then courtship, followed by engagement, and then, if all parties were still agreeable, marriage. Now, it’s “just sex” - a meaningless act like going to the bathroom.

I was there to watch as people traded true freedom for the freedom to do whatever they wanted. They would bed as many as possible. Today, one in five people in the United States are walking around with an STD. This is better?

We need a return to commitment and responsibility, and a rejection of the idea that you can’t live without a lot of sexual encounters and that your partner of the moment is not deserving of true love since that would take all the “fun” out of it.

A man and woman should grow in trust and love and self-control. It’s not easy but everything in life that is worthwhile rarely is.

God bless,
Ed

Artificial birth control is not only wrong, it is intrinsically evil and always gravely immoral, regardless of intention and circumstances.

To be moral, each and every sexual act must be marital and unitive and procreative. Contracepted sexual acts are deprived of the procreative meaning, and so those sexual acts, and the acts by which the procreative meaning is deprived, are gravely immoral.

Some forms of ABC are also abortifacient, adding the more grave sin of abortion to the sin of contraception.

Even if only one spouse is using the form of contraception, both spouses are guilty of objective mortal sin because both are deliberately choosing to engage in contracepted sexual relations.

The use of artificial contraception is a grave sin. If you are Catholic and have used contraception, you should confess this sin in confession. I heard a sermon not too long ago in which the priest pointed out that many Catholic couples use contraception, but few confess this sin in the confessional.

That’s not even the half of it…
but the strange thing is that when i read the Bible at home (OT) i see a lot of things that seem bizarre and… not too godly… according to NT and whatever… but whne i am @ Mass hearing the same things… i believe… .without one smidgeon of doubt…

the Real Presence… You should try it… .:)most catholic Churches are open in the day time… If you go There & spend … say something like…more than 40 minutes in total silence with the Lord… you will see things in your life differently… dont have to be Cath You will see things things There you wont see or expeirence anywhere else on the planet…

The whole idea of marrying someone you are “in love” with is relatively new in history. Marriages are contracted and have always been contracted for a variety of reasons. Not only this idea of romantic love which has been popularized through media etc. Love doesn’t have to come before the vows. It can legitimately come after.
yikes!!!

i cna’t even love someone I’m in love with!!! :whacky::hypno:

Yes, I know that the pope gave King Henry VIII dispensation to marry Catherine. But why then was the King referring to verses in the Bible that said that one would be 'infertile" if they married their brother’s wife, and used this as justification for wanting an annulment later? The fact that the Pope gave dispensation to marry Catherine on these grounds means that there is a contradiction somewhere: one verse requires a man to take his brother’s widow and raise his children and other verse later forbids it. I don’t understand why.
the short and likely best (only) answer to this is that

the pope is infallible…

I have, often. The only things I saw and experienced were those things that take place in Catholic churches. I don’t think there’s anything that could make me believe an all-loving being would send bears to rip apart forty-something children because they made fun of someone for being bald. They usually leave those sorts of Old Testament readings out of the rotation for Mass (it’s certainly not cycled through the same way as the Gospels and the epistles).

I appreciate the thought however.

i dont know what psg you are speaking of or what??

sounds like something i heard once about a saint??

sometimes when people wrirte stories they leave out importnat details… i do it all the time… not realizing how sometihng will sound to the reader… its called being human… but when God wnats to write something in a clear way, He speaks to people in a clear way and they write it down…

even so, there is no written thing about Jesus that compares to being with Him… which should go w/o saying but… 🤷

I had to read that like three times to try and figure out what you were saying… The passage is 2 Kings 2:23-25:
Then he [Elisha] went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!” When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number. And he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

that doesn’t mean God did that…

also, the lads could have been demons in disguise… Thye always disguise themsleves…

but God does not change… elsewhere in the bible it says that God said to Moses to tel the peple that anyone who kills someone (w/o justification, which is specified…) he is to be put to death… so God is not in favor of death, esp for young children…

i tend to think the “lads” were demons… could have been a dream, Who knows?? i would have to read the whole thing… and maybe i will remember to do that later… thanks…

Throughout the Bible, God kills (or orders the deaths of) 2,391,421 (at least) people. Full explination of this count is available at dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-many-has-god-killed.html (hopefully this link is not redacted by the mods).

At this point I feel like we should move this thread of conversation to a thread of its own so we don’t detract from the discussion of artificial birth control.

Given this statement:
Artificial birth control is not only wrong, it is intrinsically evil and always gravely immoral, regardless of intention and circumstances.

Is using birth control still considered “wrong” if it is used for medical reasons, or only where sex is involved?

So, regardless of circumstances, if birth control could save a woman’s life it is still gravely immoral? That does not sit well with me at all 😦

The official Church teaching is that ‘deliberately contraceptive acts’ are intrinsically evil. Taking artificial birth control for health reasons–especially in cases where someone is not sexually active–is morally licit. Things get tricky when someone is married but I am of the mindset that–given a full understanding of Catholic moral teaching–the act of taking artificial birth control is not deliberately contraceptive and the contraceptive effect is secondary, foreseen but not intended.

In what manner are you suggesting birth control would save someone’s life? I’m just curious as to which medical problems you are thinking of specifically.

The church does not, by the way, forbid the use of contraceptives for theraputic reasons.

Bleeding disorders or hormone imbalances immediately came to mind. I was mostly thinking of my own experience (which, for sake of handing out too much information I won’t go into) in which a type of birth control - I forget what its called - was used.

I’ll say this which I think is really weird.
All my friends are all about being vegetarian (or vegan) and making sure that the food they eat is organic and that the milk they drink came from a cow who did not get hormones.
Okay, so you spend EXTRA MONEY to get milk from a cow that didn’t have hormones. And then you drink that milk to wash down a pill that is…hormones? 🤷
What on earth…does that really make any sense?
These are the same friends of mine who take all sorts of herbal supplements (untested by the FDA) to cure all sorts of ailments because they don’t want to ‘put pills in their bodies’, but the ONE pill they can’t seem to shake is the birth control pill.
That’s just plain weird.
🤷

And then when I say something WACKY like ‘We don’t use birth control’ and I’M the weirdo.
Uh, okay.

I told my one friend that the church pushes the incredibly radical view that sex makes babies. See, everyone else thinks CERTAIN sex makes babies, but the church disagrees. Sex makes babies. I know, it’s completely nuts!! Who knew, right?
My twins were conceived while on the birth control pill. Twins. Is that like a 200% failure rate? That’s really what started me down this NFP path. I was like, ‘What’s gonna happen if I’m on NFP. Triplets?’

That brings me to my other point, which is that one of the reasons artificial birth control is wrong is because it’s LYING. And lying is wrong.
Here’s how.
Sex while on the pill leads both parties to believe that no children will be produced.
False.
It greatly reduces the chances of having children, yet somehow, in people’s minds ‘greatly reduce’ becomes ‘impossible’
Again, twins people.
I had TWINS.
Whatever, Ortho-tricyclene. See if i believe anything YOU ever say again!

I think people who otherwise oppose the use of artificial hormones in their food is because these are a) untested and b) non-human hormones. Also, herbal remedies which are not tested by the FDA (as well as homeopathy in the general case) rely entirely on the placebo effect. The birth control pill, on the other hand, does not and actually works and most people aren’t willing to leave whether or not they get pregnant to chance or the placebo effect.

You realize that no method of birth control is 100% effective, right? It says that on the paperwork that comes with the pill, on the back of every box of condoms and on every birth control advertisement. Statistics vary on efficacy depending on method and usage. I’m happy to link you to the statistics if you’d like.

And if a woman does happen to get pregnant, and decides to keep the baby, at least the baby will be better off because mom has eaten organically.😃
