Why Attack the Pope?

I agree with this article for the most part.

However I have to admit, as much as I don’t believe the Pope had as much to do with it as the media says, if he did knowingly move pedophiles around without regard for the safety of young boys, it is an outrage. He, as the bishop at the time, should have known better.

I support Benedict. I think the media is fudging its facts to sell papers, but whether or not he really did it is still at the back of my mind. If he didn’t do it (I believe this with 95% conviction) then it doesn’t shock me that the media is attacking him. They look for any excuse. But if he did do it, then he needs to come to terms with that and repent of his sins like any fallen human. Good adults can NOT stand by when there is abuse of children happening.

“Fudging” means lying, doesn’t it? Why go easy on them?
If they are indeed lying, I don’t think we should by any means go easy on them. I do think, though, that I can’t prove they are lying just like we can’t prove definitively that the pope didn’t knowingly shuffle around these priests.

I tend to give a lot of grace and patience until something can be definitively proven, especially with somethink as touchy as this. I personally don’t beieve the media’s claim. I personally think the Pope did things for benign reasons, or for what he thought was best. I believe this in faith, I can’t prove it. I also can’t prove that the media is lying.

The media are going for the jugular because they now understand that the Catholic Church will never water down its sexual morality, and that the only way to neutralize its moral influence is to discredit its highest authority. Where mockery will not do the trick, try defamation and distortion.
The profit motive concerns the leftist press very little. Nor does the welfare of the children figure into the writings of people who work hard to ensure that the next generation is aborted, or never born at all. 80 per cent of the abuse by priest was of teenage boys by homosexual priests after all, and this is not going to be one of the Leftist causes; rest assured it will not be.
It is all about propagating the leftist ideology. The media is merely their instrument here.

Absolutely 100% spot on.However the media is quite the willing instrument given the leftist leanings of most “reporters” and editorialists.A conservative is the remarkable exception.

Quote from the article:
One answer might be that the Church is held to a higher standard because it professes a higher standard.
I think that is a good part of the right answer. If there is any one place on the face of this earth that should be considered a safe place, it should be the church. When it fails to be that safe place, there should be outrage.

I think it has more to do with a show of hypocrisy. When an institute says one thing but does another, such as hiding sexual predators within their church, they lose credibility. That article was just another example of trying to justify the actions of the church and minimizing the problem. Everytime I read an article like that or hear something like that on the radio, I wonder how long the delusion will go on.

Because he is in charge now. That’s the way politics works. Everybody who is following this knows that most of the known cases of abuse took place during other papacies, but those men are dead and gone. Nothing to be gained by attacking the dead. Benedict XVI stepped into the breach and will have to shoulder burden. It goes with the office.

This journalist claims the Media attack on the Papacy has to do with a possible nuclear weapon being used in the upcoming attack on Iran and is an attempt to weaken the Catholic Church’s moral authority in the world.

Also to cover up the U.S. economic corruption and white collar corporate crimes committed during the Wall Street Real Estate Bubble by leetting those stories fade into the background:

“Notwithstanding the lies, there are some disturbing coincidences. Why so many accusations (some going back 40 years) appeared all at once in various countries around the world? This is a peculiar coincidence, but there are others, far more complex, that lead to a somewhat more disquieting picture.”

Interesting article by a jesuit here:

The Catholic Union of Great Britain issued a press release in response to the media coverage of the “defamation and distortion” by Dawkin and Hitchen against the Holy Father. Was the press release given the same amount of media coverage? No. And, we all know why.

Just returned from vigil Mass.
Our parish priest homily was on the Good Shepherd and the damage done by the bad shepherds in our midst.
He was quite hard hitting, saying that if Pope Benedict knew about all this in the past and took decisions to protect the Church rather than the interests of abused children, then he needed to consider his position and stand down. Left us all dumbstruck.
Lord help us in our time of need.

I’m sorry to hear that you have suffered under such a priest. You must alert your bishop immediately so that this man cannot destroy any more souls with his folly. For a priest to attack the good Pope in the presence of Our Lord at Mass is unthinkable. And it is truly villainous that those with a Leftist, secular and liberal agenda will use the tragedy of child abuse as ammunition in their unholy anti-crusade.

The Church stands as the very last bulwark in this whole world against the evils of abortion and homosexuality. Those who attack this bulwark do so, knowingly or unwittingly, in the advance of the causes of child murder, sodomy, witchcraft and every conceivable villainy which would run even more rampant than they already do were it not for the overwhelming holiness of Our Lord’s Church, thanks to His Divine Grace.

Pray for this wayward priest, but literally for Heaven’s sake you must do everything in your power either to have him removed, or remove yourself from his poisonous presence. And if he merely labors under an amazing and inexcusable ignorance, you must educate him in all haste for the good of Catholic souls.

I agree, he is behaving in an irresponsible fashion.

This is a good point to make and our parish priest made the same the following week.

It’s quite a stance, at the same time I understand his frustration. If actions by the hierarchy are suspect, they undermine our ability to evangelize by impugning the work that we do. We believe that the Church will not fall into error, and the Pope will be protected by the Spirit in making pronouncements on matters of faith, doctrine and morality. We do not believe that he will never sin - though at this point I don’t see anything but speculation that Benedict had a part in keeping the bad shepherds around.

Likewise, we do not believe that priests will be free from error, either doctrinally or personally.

My personal stance is three-fold:
  1. Defend the Church for what it is - a hospital for sinners, repository of Truth and mechanism of Grace in this world.
  2. Repair what needs repairing - if there are those who are unable to minister either because some temptation has struck them to the point of causing scandal, or because their intentions are not for the good of the Church, they ought to be removed from ministry.
  3. Discern where anti-Catholicism has taken up this cause and fight it. We cannot judge accused priests with prejudice - and it bothers me deeply that they already seem to be judged by the media on the basis of accusations, when in reality very few are convicted.
In the John Jay report, for example, around 7,000 priests had been accused, 4,000 of which were still alive. The memory of those 3,000 deceased priests is now tarnished and the accusers gain neither justice nor relief where they are victims, nor are they corrected and rebuked if they lie.

Of those 4,000 living, around 1,000 were investigated by law enforcement. The reputation of the other 3,000 is now tarnished as well, justly or unjustly, and invokes scandal among the parishes they serve. Where it is the actions of the priest, the Lord will judge him. Where the priest is innocent, the Lord will judge the accuser. In either case, we must be strong in faith and admonish our Church to humility and resolve.

Of those 1,000 investigated, only around 140 were tried and convicted.

I am struck by the difference in perception.

The Lord offered to spare Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of 1 just man in a city of thousands of perverts.

Our enemies, on the other hand, slander the thousands of innocents because of the actions proven only of a few hundred.

The guilty should bear the civil penalty for their crimes, but the rest is spiritual warfare.
