Why be a SLC Mormon and not an Independence Mormon?

Aside from the problems with the Book of Mormon, why would anyone belong to the Utah Mormon sect? Why wouldn’t one look at the churches which actually have doctrine which agrees with the Book of Mormon like the Community of Christ or the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of LDS or maybe a Restoration Branch of the RDLS? Something went horribly wrong once the Mormon movement reached Nauvoo – it simply walked away from Book of Mormon doctrines. Even if you could prove the Book of Mormon true wouldn’t you want to belong to a church which actually teaches its doctrines? That’s not the LDS Church.

secondly they obviously think they DO adhere to the Mormon doctrines… i have heard several sects say they do, while arguing with each other. Frankly, i have read the Book of Mormon and it is ALMOST as confusing as the Koran, so you could probably argue almost any point you like from it.

if you mean Polygamy? after arriving in the west, the leaders announced that Polygamy was mandatory. required for the “highest blessings” and all the Mormons were expected to practice it… it was repudiated much later in order to become more acceptable when they started thinking about becoming a state…

They didn’t actually repudiate polygamy. They just don’t practice it at the present time.

The Independence branch of Mormonism is generally Trinitarian in line with the Book of Mormon. They also don’t have secret ceremonies which are strictly opposed in the Book of Mormon.

The Independence church insists that the President must be a direct male descendant of Joseph Smith. They look upon Brigham Young as a usurper.

As one wag put it, the Indpenence group has the President, and the SLC group has the Church.

The Community of Christ doesn’t have that any longer. The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of LDS does have a male descendant, but through a maternal line rather than a patriarchal line.

The Community of Christ is also pro-Choice. Be that as it may, the Community of Christ doesn’t require any member to accept the authenticity of ‘The Book of Mormon’. I also understand that the current President, Mr. Veazey, is uncomfortable with being called ‘Prophet, Seer, and Revelator’. Those two items right there might deter a devout Restorationist from joining the Community of Christ.

If I were still a Restorationist, I would have nothing to do with any of the Independence groups. They constantly bicker amongst themselves. They accomplish nothing. The different groups of the Restoration Branches constantly snipe at each other, and are at odds with the Community of Christ and the Remnant Church. The Community of Christ is suing at least one Restoration Branch for copyright infringement. etc, etc, etc.

Who, in their right mind, would want any part of that?
