Why be Catholic? I miss my church!

Contarini,

You just posted that I, Exporter, keep “harping” on the CCC. ( harping =music? Ha, Ha) I keep harping?

Here is my remark that includes the CCC. “Show me in our Catechism of the Catholic Church that the laity is supposed to sing in church. It isn’t there! Sure there can be a choir, but not laity. Go look, try to find it. Thanks again for your nice post.”

I have searched the Catechism and it is as I said. Go to Paragraphs 1158 & 1156. That is where you will find reference to music. It doesn’t mention Martin Luther, Choirs or laity singing.

Don’t you accept the Catechism of the Catholic Church? This Catechism was energised by John Paul II and Cardinal Ratsinger was in charge of writting it. I heard there were more than 10 rewrites. It is the Catechism of the Ropman Catholic Church, and any Roman Catholic should believe it since is the only book of what the Church believes.

You and I will never agree. And what you believe, based on whatever you want to use, will not dent my beliefs. I don’t like singing by the laity, that’s why I go to Mass during the week when there is none of this Protestant singing. Yes, Protestant. The man who is the music director is a Protestant. How do you like that?

I’ll throw in my two cents here. I think one reason that God allows us Christians to remain divided is that we all have something to bring to the table. The Orthodox have their liturgy and respect for tradition. Anglicans too have their liturgy, and their tolerance, while I think it goes too far, is an antidote for some of the extreme legalism and exclusivity we often find in Christian churches. Baptists have their fervor. And don’t Quakers have a relevant voice in the debate of how much Christians should participate in violence? These things and more can and should be brought to the table. But the table is in the Catholic Church. And once you come to realize that the Catholic Church is the true Church, then you are obliged to enter into communion with her.

Most of the denominations seem to exist because we Catholics haven’t been paying attention to something. The Orthodox Church, for example, is around because we became obsessed with who we had jurisdiction over, rather than being the servants we were called to be. Lutheranism came about because we didn’t want to look at and do something about how worldly and corrupt we had become.

I believe that Catholics should come to understand that we bear the responsibility for the divided state of Christendom. Why is that? Because it was the Church that was supposed to keep all Christians united. As a result, our witness to the world has been compromised, and many of our Christian brothers and sisters are deprived of sacraments. Since it is our mess, we should do everything we can to clean it up.

RomanRiteTeen, it sounds as if you have come to the realization that the Catholic Church is the true Church. If I am right about that, then, naturally, you must obey God. It’s possible that God has brought about these circumstances in your life to get you to reflect on what it was that brought you to the Church. I don’t mean that you are becoming Catholic for superficial reasons, quite the contrary. What I am saying is that it is just possible that your reasons are deeper than what you would express if asked. If I am right, then maybe the devil wants you to believe that you’re becoming Catholic for superficial reasons, perhaps some of the reasons you mention to others, so that he can attack those superficial reasons and make you believe that you really don’t want to be Catholic after all. The devil’s strategy, then, would be to draw your attention away from the things going on deep inside you.

But maybe I’m wrong.

I would like to thank everyone for their replies on this thread. When I posted it, I admit I was deeply despairing.

Mass is the most beautiful thing a man can experience. When it comes down to it, I cannot deny the Truth contained and found within the Church. It was for superficial reasons I even looked away.

As I get closer to Confirmation obstacles have been appearing, it is only by Divine Providence I haven’t wandered too far.
The Hound of Heaven would have it no other way. 🙂
