I was raised a catholic and haven’t gone to church regularily in a long time. I went to a catholic school until 5th grade and it was pretty awful. Anyways, I can’t really think of any compelling reasons to be religious other than it is a healthy thing to help keep things in perspective in life, and be thankful for what I have in life. I’m a freshman in college right now and that would also be a road block. I don’t think I could ever take the catholic religion seriously because I don’t think it’s possible that someone knew all of the answers so many thousands of years ago and science can put so many things in question in the bible blah blah blah. Just some random thoughts.

Peer pressure?

Is that what the Catholic Church teaches? Does the Church teach how to do open heart surgery? or how to travel faster than light?

Such as?

Catholic school was awful because it was extremely strict, I was obviously young at the time but with the exception of a few, most of the teachers seemed like generally angry people. One of my teachers was a nun who said something along the lines of “if you sin you will have to go home and sit on a nail in a closet for an hour”. Also one of the teacher got arrested for “feeling up” students. Anyways public school was much better in my opinion.

No the catholic church doesn’t teach you how to travel faster than light, obviously. However, a lot of current scientific knowledge can explain what religion attempted to “hypothosize” about.

I also don’t agree with a lot of things that go against catholic faith like how you can’t use a condom, no premarital sex, how priests can’t get married, how women can’t be priests. Sex is a natural human instinct, and the sexual repression against priests has lead to a lot of bad bad things as I’m sure you know. Also the fact that the pope has helped cover up for priests that were pedophiles is pretty disgusting to me.

I can only speak for myself, but the reason I go to church on Sundays, and practice Christian devotions during the week is because in doing that, I meet God. If it wasn’t for His Presence, it would all be a bit dry and dull.

Do I, or my church, know all the answers? Absolutely not! Does science, and life in general, raise a lot of questions? Sure! There are a lot of questions, but science doesn’t proof the Bible to be untrue, and there are plenty of eminent scientists who are believing Christians. For me, the whole thing isn’t about “the answers”. It’s about relationship with God, and that relationship is so much more than facts or knowledge.

If you are interested in knowing God, seek Him. Ask Him to reveal himself. I siggest that the fact you are here, asking this question, means you are at least curious about Him. Your local Catholic parish should (I hope) be able to offer you resources to help you in your search. 🙂

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
― Marcus Aurelius

Godith is spot on here. I was just about to post a similar suggestion.

Never stop searching. Never stop asking. Always seek answers. The truth always rises to the top. God wants you near Him. He will lead you to everlasting joy.

First of all, please take a look at this essay, excerpted from a book by Peter Kreeft and Fr. Ronald Tocelli.

What are some of these issues that science has got right but Christianity has got wrong?
I also don’t agree with a lot of things that go against catholic faith like how you can’t use a condom,

no premarital sex,
Would you take biblical passages against this practice into account?
how priests can’t get married,
This is a discipline of the Catholic Church, rather than a doctrine, so priestly celibacy isn’t some eternal truth that must be believed for salvation, and could be changed at any time. Please see Matthew chapter 19 and 1 Corinthians chapter 7 for biblical support.
how women can’t be priests.
I’ll let someone else field this one.
Sex is a natural human instinct, and the sexual repression against priests has lead to a lot of bad bad things as I’m sure you know. Also the fact that the pope has helped cover up for priests that were pedophiles is pretty disgusting to me.
This issue is widely, and woefully, misunderstood. If you’d like I can PM you something splendidly informative about it.

your thoughts are all about you
religion is duty owed to God, your creator, who sent his Son to suffer and die in your place for the forgiveness of your sins, and sends his Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide you. Religion is about your relationship with God.

If you see no need for that relationship, get thee to a church and contemplate Jesus Christ on the cross and think about him for a while. If you don’t see Jesus there, seek him in the face of the poor, and find someone to serve.

The only honest reason to believe in anything is that it is true. Either Jesus is God Incarnate, or He is not. Either the Catholic Church is the Church established by Jesus to lead us all into all truth, or it is not.

It would not be comforting to me in the least to subscribe to a well-meaning but ultimately false fairy tale. If that were the case, I might as well just pretend I’m a Jedi knight.

I would encourage you to really spend the time praying and researching about these things. When I was starting off in college, I had many questions and doubts as well. That there is a lot of anti-Catholic misinformation out there (especially in certain corners of academia) didn’t help. But when I looked into exactly what the Church actually teaches and why, that changed everything.

God bless you in your search.

Religion is like the cup. And Jesus is the coffee.

You can’t order coffee at Starbucks but not get a cup, or it gets all messy and you burn yourself. Same thing with religion.

Religion is the vehicle, the container by which we get Jesus. You can try to have Jesus without religion but like coffee without a cup, it’s hard to handle and in the end you just get a mess.

So it’s a matter of taste. You did not like it strict while others did. I went to a reasonably strict school too and did not mind it at all. We had a male teacher who always sat and enjoyed watching the boys play tennis or some such and everyone knew what he was fond of. Never got arrested though. Note that these were non religious schools. There was corporal punishment. No-one had an issue with it.

Well no condom because one is supposed to be mature about sex. Do it with a girl you married, because you loved her, and if children follow, so be it, and love them too. Why is this bad? Is it because there’s less kinky pleasure that way? But why is that religion’s fault that one can’t have so much kinky pleasure with many, many women? Is kinky sex really rewarding? Is it a good enough reason to stay outside the Church? Is it also necessary to reject God because one has an appetite for sex with a variety of women and one (after marriage) is not enough?

Priests not marrying - that’s the Church saying it has no authority to grant that. If Catholicism was made up, we could change it from season to season, you know, allow sex between males one year, next year allow a little bit of murder, next year some corruption and so forth. Standards are strict and the Church takes its duty seriously. It could lighten up and possibly become more popular. But it would compromise itself.
and the sexual repression against priests has lead to a lot of bad bad things as I’m sure you know.
Statistics showed that fewer Catholic priests were molesters than other professions, for example married teachers or at least teachers who were allowed to have as many sex partners outside their job as they wished.
Also the fact that the pope has helped cover up for priests that were pedophiles is pretty disgusting to me.
There were some cover ups but cover ups and mistakes occur everywhere. Why should members of the church be perfect? Would you envisage that Catholicism must be true only if the clergy are perfect? Why would it have to be so? Is that not kind of like having secret knowledge of God?

I personally think the cover ups were more from negligence than any sort of malice. Child abuse has been with us for ages but most people find it so difficult to get their heads around that people can molest youngsters that it has been treated lightly everywhere for centuries.

I suck at quoting so bare with me. I’ll just respond to your questions comments in order.

Yes, in North America. I believe year 2001.

I’m just going off the top of my head for this one-
The human race could not have started with only two people(Adam and Eve)

Snakes don’t talk

The earth is billions of years old

Evolution gives a much more thorough explanation for how humans came to be.

I am by no means bashing the catholic faith, but how do theists deal with the fact that many many parts of the bible can be put into serious question?

I read that birth control article. Imo, one reason that outweighs all of those is that so that teenagers don’t get pregnant.

That’s be great if you could PM me info on how the issue of priests molesting kids in misunderstood.

Eh everyone’s entitled to live their life how they want but I’d be willing to bet the average age people lose their virginity is like 16. Sexual repression is one of the biggest problems of society especially in the u.s. I’m not saying everyone should go bang as many people as possible, just that marriage seems like a long time to wait to have sex.

The point of the creation story is not a play by play, how it got done story. The creation account is more like a painting than a photograph. The point of the creation account is that God created everything and has a plan for our salvation.

Keep in mind, there is discussion in the scientific community about the origin of man.

“Snakes don’t talk”. Really? I’ve got to stop answering that one in my backyard.

The Church does not weigh in on this argument. The point, again, is that God created it out of nothing. If you want to believe the Earth was created in 7 literal days, ok. If you choose to believe the Earth is 100 Billion years old, ok.

Evolution is a theory.

Please let us know which parts of the Bible you are referring to. Even better yet, you could spend a couple hours with a priest. He could answer many of you questions better than us.

The contraception issue has nothing to do with teenagers getting pregnant. Your point of view is “they are going to do it, adjust the rules”, if I understand you right. The Church would never have lasted through the first years, if they changed its teaching based on that idea. Teenagers have always had hormones, pregnancy has always been the outcome of sex.

Just so you don’t think it’s a fairy tale, there is historical evidence regarding Jesus of Nazareth. “The Case For Christ” by Lee Strobel covers the historical arguments for Christ.

I pray God leads you on this journey.

Why be relegious?
To learn how to spell “religious”?

No, in all seriousness, as a non-believer, I don’t think that there are any compelling reasons to think that supernatural religions (like Christianity) are true. I can think of some good reasons that individuals might want to be religious: because religion provides them with a sense of community, because they love people who are religious and they don’t want to stir up any problems, because they think the rituals are kind of cool, etc.

But true? There’s really not a good reason for thinking that. As other posters said, you can try asking God to reveal himself to you, but if you really want to be thorough about your approach, you should ask each god of each religion to reveal himself (or herself) to you, one each day. That will keep you pretty busy, since there are hundreds of religions and thousands of different god-concepts within those religions.

After long periods of praying, meditating, fasting, yearing for an answer, you may actually succeed in brainwashing yourself into having an “experience” of some kind (voices, bright lights, visions, etc.). If this happens, you may want to ask this “god” – whichever one responds – why he only seems to reveal himself to people through extremely dubious means of coming to knowledge, like “personal experiences” of hearing voices.

Honestly, if I ever started hearing voices or seeing white lights, my first thought would not be “God is communicating with me!” My first thought would be, “I need to get to a doctor!”
I can’t really think of any compelling reasons to be religious other than it is a healthy thing to help keep things in perspective in life, and be thankful for what I have in life.
Obviously, those are good things, but you don’t need religion to keep a perspective on life and to be glad that you have the things you have.
I don’t think I could ever take the catholic religion seriously because I don’t think it’s possible that someone knew all of the answers so many thousands of years ago and science can put so many things in question in the bible blah blah blah. Just some random thoughts.
Well, you’re already getting a taste of the answers on here: no matter how many contradictions one can find in a religion’s doctrines or holy book – and the Bible is chock-full of contradictions, both internal and external (i.e. it just gets so many things wrong about what we know about the world) – the true believers always have an answer to explain away the contradiction and make the whole thing internally consistent. The same is true of every religion.

But the thing is, it doesn’t matter if an idea is internally consistent or even if it’s consistent with some of what we know about reality: consistency isn’t sufficient to determine that an idea is true.

For example, I could, if I wanted to, write a long book with a complicated story that is completely internally consistent and contains elements from reality, but the moral of the story is that I, NonServiam, am a superbeing whom everyone should worship.

That right there ought to tell you that even if someone can argue that the Bible is internally consistent and doesn’t necessarily contradict reality – and that’s a tough argument to make – but even if someone can argue that, it still wouldn’t come anywhere near demonstrating that its claims are true.

That’s why it’s a waste of time to try to ask the true believers about contradictions because there’s always an answer that (attempts to) resolve the contradiction.

Anyway, I sense from your tone that you probably know all this already and that you’re just here to see what wacky responses you can get or what kind of “lulz” you can get out of the folks from around here…good luck to you.

I guess it goes back to do you believe in God? If you do you want to do his work and live the life given to us by his Grace to live.

Do you wnat eternal life in Christ or not?? Its you choice and this is the time you must decide.

You cannot deny the truth because by your admt the truth was revealed to you. You either accept the good news and the the truth or you deny it. It really up to you.

People forget this is a test. Its the real deal. You either live your life for God or you deny him. There are no second chances. You really need think about this.

People tend to think that they can go through this world and deny God and then enter heaven. That is not what the true word of God says.

You are putting you soul in grave danger. Please don’t every doubt God, he can do anything and he does indeed have all the answers.

I think you have some glaring misconceptions about what the Catholic Church believes and teaches. Don’t be so quick to accept whatever fanciful sterotype the secular media and academia throw out there regarding Catholicism. Do the research yourself. We;ve heard these sorts of “objections” a thousand times before. There are many, many articles and Church documents out there just waiting to be read. 😉

The Bible is not a science textbook. There is nothing in the Creation account that is contradicted by scientific evidence because it is not a scientific account of creation.

Eh everyone’s entitled to live their life how they want
How do you know this? Just because we CAN, does it mean we SHOULD?
but I’d be willing to bet the average age people lose their virginity is like 16.
Which says what? I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. Are you saying that because you think the majority of people lose their virginity at 16, it’s the right thing to do? If so, why is it the right thing to do? The majority of people listen to garbage music and watch rubbish Hollywood films and think them great. Does this mean that reviewers like Roger Ebert are wrong when they find a really good film most people would not be able to sit through?
Sexual repression is one of the biggest problems of society especially in the u.s.
If the majority of people lose their virginity at 16 how can this be true? I don’t think sexual repression is a problem in America, or anywhere in the West. I can gather there are some very shy, withdrawn people, perhaps with personality disorders, but those people have other problems.
I’m not saying everyone should go bang as many people as possible, just that marriage seems like a long time to wait to have sex.
Surely it’s something worth waiting for. I mean if it’s just about pleasure, sure, it would be mad to wait. It’s much more than just pleasure.

Do you believe in rights and wrongs? If so, do you believe these are objective or just subjective choices/tastes? Do you think you could be wrong about some things you think are good?

BTW outside of religion, and grounding of morality in God, there can be no objective morality. Everything is one’s own choice - including things like human rights. One can think them admirable or desirable, because they provide pleasure of enrichment of some sort, i.e. provide some benefit assumed to be valuable, but all of that is matter of convention and mutual agreement.

I guess it goes back to do you believe in God? If you do you want to do his work and live the life given to us by his Grace to live.
I’m not sure if I believe in god. Define god.
Do you wnat eternal life in Christ or not?? Its you choice and this is the time you must decide.
Eternal life in Christ? Please explain. I actually must not decide anything it is all a matter of choice.
You cannot deny the truth because by your admt the truth was revealed to you. You either accept the good news and the the truth or you deny it. It really up to you.
Deny what truth? If you look at this whole situation objectively I likely living in more truth than you are. I suggest you look up the definition of the word “Truth”.
People forget this is a test. Its the real deal. You either live your life for God or you deny him. There are no second chances. You really need think about this.
Mmk, so what do you say to the other billions of people who are involved in other religions? What about good caring people that are atheist or agnostic? There are no second chances? Actually there are plenty of second chances in Catholicism. A good practicing catholic could go out, rape pillage and murder then go to confession and be forgiven. I am indeed thinking about this and it’s boggling my mind.
People tend to think that they can go through this world and deny God and then enter heaven. That is not what the true word of God says.
