How did a faithful assistant become a moral objector?
“The reality of what I saw really left me with no other option. Because at the end of my life, I’m not going to answer to Bishop Malone. I’m going to answer to God.”
Siobhan O’Connor
"To bear witness to corruption in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church was a painful decision for me, and remains so. But I am an old man, one who knows he must soon give an accounting to the Judge for his actions and omissions, one who fears Him who can cast body and soul into hell. A Judge who, even in his infinite mercy, will render to every person salvation or damnation according to what he has deserved. Anticipating the dreadful question from that Judge – “How could you, who had knowledge of the truth, keep silent in the midst of falsehood and depravity?” – what answer could I give?"
Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano
After hearing survivors’ accounts of the abuse they suffered and the trauma they are still enduring, I was overcome with the desire to assist them with more than a sympathetic ear and the promise of prayer.
Bishop Malone’s episcopal motto is a beautiful one: “Live the Truth in Love.”
Be truthful with us, Bishop Malone. Put an end to this toxic secrecy and painful silence. And, if you love us, begin the process of allowing new episcopal leadership to come to our diocese.
WHich ones… All of them?I don’t understand our Church anymore at all. I’ve lost so much respect for the bishops, Cardinals and pope.
There are around 180 bishops in the US and roughly 37500 priests at any given time. Which ones have broken your trust? I do not believe I live in diocese that is an isolated bubble. I think I live in a fairly normal run of the mill diocese. I think that the Dioceses with these types of problems are the isolated bubbles. But hey I have an open mind prove me wrong! Many, yes. When someone violates my trust so severely it takes work to earn it back. No one seems interested in working towards rebuilding trust. All that seem to happen is gaslighting, shaming, and covering up. I am happy for you if you are blessed to live in an i solares bubble. Most of us don’t.
I would love to change your mind. But how on earth could that even be possible. I do not think I have that kind of power!I don’t want to change your mind, just as you don’t seem to want to change mine.
I probably fall between you and @13pollitos on this. You asked a question and I will provide my answer. I think about 60 Bishops have asked that the Vigano accusations be investigated. I would say that many of the other bishops would be on my list of those “letting me down” on these issues. Many, but probably not most. I do see more and more individual priest speaking out, but many more remain silent. I live in the diocese of Omaha and belong to the largest parish there. We have now had 3 priests in the last 12 years removed from duties. One old allegation 30+ years ago with a HS girl, one recently who seems to have a proclivity to young adult males/seminarians, and one recently who had inappropriate conversations and boundary violations. I don’t know with certainty if all these priests were/are guilty. I do know there was a non-transparent handling of two of these cases by the diocese. I am highly suspect of any diocese that has released the names of 30 or 40 problem priests dating back to the 50’s when my own experience of the evidence is so much different. Malone has just revised his list by almost double and left off another doubling because the priests are now dead. The problems are bad! The coverups are atrocious! Very few are willing to admit that the highest corollary to the problem is homosexuality. They have a long way to go for me to trust them again. There are around 180 bishops in the US and roughly 37500 priests at any given time. Which ones have broken your trust?
