Why can't Catholics be Masons?

Hello,
My husband has been asked to join the Masons and is interested in doing it. He is not happy with the fact that I told him Catholics are prohibited from being a Mason (he’s a convert from a year ago and did it “to make me happy” I learned so he’s not really practicing now). Can you provide an explanation of this that I can share with him?
