Why can't I read and "interpret" what I read in the Bible?

Why has it been taught that I can’t read and “interpret” what I read in the bible?? In the Second Letter of Peter Ch 1 V. 20 it says no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation. I’m not trying to “prophesize”, I’m trying to understand what I read and apply it in my daily life. I have been told I need a priest to interpret what I read because I personally don’t have the authority to comprehend. Please explain. Thank you!!
