Why can't I receive communion at a Non-denominational church?

I have recently attended a nondenominational church with a friend and recieved communion there. I just read that it is sinful to recieve communion or the eucharist at noncatholic services. I dont understand why since they only believe it is a symbol and not actually the Body and Blood. How do I explain why I cant recieve communion at their church?
