I guess I can understand the ban on alcohol since it can lead one into a druken stupor, but why no coffee, tea, or other caffine? Is Coke or Pepsi out, too?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
Are you serious??? I thought it might be because drinking alters one’s physical, mental state or something like that.because they found a copper plate in the bottom of the salt lake that said they could not, even though no one saw them find this plate and they didn’t have special glasses to read it or a magician named josephine s. They found it in the OT bible along with the prophesy of the plates, somewhere, still yet to be seen by non mormons.
I think this is the probable reason. It is a mood/mind altering drug. Many people do not realize that when they drink caffinated liquids they are using drugs. Of course, caffeine is not scutinized like heroin or cocaine, so people do not think that way, but it sure is an addictive and potent substance none the less (IMHO)…Are you serious??? The story goes that Joseph Smith’s wife Emma was complaining that their church services were full of smoke from tobacco and men chewing tobacco and spitting. Yeah, ew.I guess I can understand the ban on alcohol since it can lead one into a druken stupor, but why no coffee, tea, or other caffine? Is Coke or Pepsi out, too?

Not to get off topic, but as I understand it, all males serve as priests? What would happen if they were breaking rules? Are the “sacraments” still valid if they serve them while conducting a life of sin/crime? I’ve been wondering this for a while…This is a very strictly held belief. Mormons who want to attend mormon temples must adhere to this.
Priest in Catholicism and priest in mormonism are two different things altogether. Hardly comparable at all.Not to get off topic, but as I understand it, all males serve as priests? OK, thank you. Some of this I knew, but I honestly never studied Mormonism. If a “priest” was living a life of say lying, doing drugs and stealing, I assume that would be very serious (on many levels)…Priest in Catholicism and priest in mormonism are two different things altogether. Hardly comparable at all.
All males in the mormon church, who are “worthy”, are ordained to the mormon priesthood. Deacons at 12 years old. “Teachers” at 14 years old. Priests at 16 years old. Elders at 19 years old.
So you can see right off that a 16 year old boy doesn’t have much in common with a religiously educated Catholic Priest.
I have never heard the term “valid”, in regards to the mormon sacrament. Not once. “Valid” is a term that isn’t used in mormonism at all. It is one of the many Catholic terms that I had to figure out what it meant.
All mormons have interviews with their bishop, who is a closer comparison to a Catholic priest. But still not the same at all. The bishop asks them questions to determine their worthiness. Some get quite personal. Of course, people can lie and who would know?
But, it isn’t likely that a 16-18 year old boy is living a life of crime. Possible, but not likely. The sin part, probably some of that going on. People in mormonism are supposed to confess their sins to a bishop. But there is no Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is a system where if you know you have done something seriously wrong, you go tell your bishop. In the case of a priest, the bishop would most likely put a hiatus on the boy blessing the sacrament.
But, the sacrament, the only sacrament that mormons have, comparable to the Eucharist also is no the same thing at all.
Plain old white bread, like Wonder Bread is used. They fill up little plastic cups, about a 1/2 ounce I would guess, with tap water. The little plastic cups are put in a tray that is made specifically to hold a bunch of them. I don’t know how many, maybe 50 or so.
The priest breaks the wonder bread into little bit sized pieces, into a tray. Says a written prayer over it. The 12 year old deacons pass the trays around, like the baskets for donations at mass. Same thing. The tray goes in one side and comes out the other and a boy is there to pick it up to take it to the next pew.
The priest then says a prayer over the little trays of water and they are passed out the same as the bread.
Mormons do not believe in the real presence, at all, in any way, shape or form. They specifically state in their prayer over the bread and water that it is a “remembrance of Him”.
No person in the congregation is required to confess their sins in order to take the sacrament. Sin or not, everyone takes a piece of bread and a little cup of water, from babies barely old enough to eat bread all the way to the old folks.
I someone doesn’t take part, everyone wonders what is up with them because rarely is a person barred by their bishop from taking the sacrament. They would be in some pretty serious sin and possibly even on their way towards serious punishent…disfellowshipment or excommunication.
So valid? No such thing really, in mormon venacular, other than the priest is required to read the blessing prayer exactly as it is written, while kneeling. If he messes it up, he has to start over. That’s about it.
The bishop is watching the whole thing, and will stop the boy-priest if he doesn’t get something right. I have only seen this happen when the boy doesn’t get the prayer right.
Ha, don’t even get me started there. I have more than reservations. I’m moving if that creepy crawler gets elected! He lies and lies. And, mormons have this grand desire to get one of their own into the US presidency. They think it will a) legitimize their religion and b) save the nation. Literally. Save.RebeccaJ,
You sure know a lot about Mormonism. You descriptions confirm what I’ve always thought (and I mean no offense): it really is a strange religion. And not to get off topic even further, but this is why I have reservations about a Mormon president (i.e. Romney).
Definitely. The list is similar to the Catholic list o’ sins. Including that ‘m’ word…masturbation. Some bishops just ask the question outright. “Are you…?”. Though most cover it under the question, “Are you chaste?”OK, thank you. Some of this I knew, but I honestly never studied Mormonism. If a “priest” was living a life of say lying, doing drugs and stealing, I assume that would be very serious (on many levels)…

I thought of those two points, actually. The first more than the second. I didn’t know that he’s a liar. I will have to read up on him more. Conservative radio talk show host Dennis Prager actually spoke highly of him, and I usually trust his opinion. He says what needs to be said to get elected. He ran as a more to the liberal side of politics, when he was elected the gov. of massachussets. He was for abortion then, and I suspected that he really wasn’t, but said he was in order to get elected.I thought of those two points, actually. The first more than the second. Divine revelations that conveniently solve personal annoyances of the alleged prophet as well. Wow… If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought this guy was Mohammed in a previous life. The story goes that Joseph Smith’s wife Emma was complaining that their church services were full of smoke from tobacco and men chewing tobacco and spitting. Yeah, ew.
So, voila, a new revelation for Smith that mormons call the “Word of Wisdom”. In that it states that “hot drinks” are bad for you. Subsequent mormon prophets have clarified this as coffee and tea.
I have often thought that too. The similarities between those two religions at times are uncanny.Divine revelations that conveniently solve personal annoyances of the alleged prophet as well. Wow… If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought this guy was Mohammed in a previous life.
