Why can't (not all but some) Protestants leave us (Catholics) alone with our devotion?

Manny, I believe that if anyone disagrees with Catholic doctrine or simply does not share your same opinion, you immediately take the position and assumption that they are attacking you or are spreading lies about the church.
Some will lie, and there are those who have a complete misunderstand of what Non-Catholic Christians believe. Those who spread lies about the Church are out there. Jack Chick is one of them. Of course, you know who Jack Chick is. If you don’t, look him up and google him.

But why? You are very vehimate about not wanting anything to do with theirs and are constantly pointing out what is wrong with Protestantism. Why should they care about yours?
Because Protestantism doctrine is man-made and the man who started was a rebellion monk name Martin Luther, who separated from the Church. Since 1515-1530 and there after has been voices within the Protestant circle claiming the Pope as the Anti-Christ. There still individual Protestant groups who still believe this and some would even go at length to claim the Church is the whore of Babylon.

They also claim that Mary, who is our Queen of Heaven is the queen of heaven in Jeremiah. You can try to deny this but there are Protestants who believe this to be true. Of course the majority of Protestants don’t held this belief, but you can’t ignore the fact that some of the extreme Protestants will go at length at the Pope role in the so called Rapture, as the Anti-Christ right hand man.

In regards the OP question, ‘they’ cannot!

As an orphan yearns a parent;
As a lost child yearns the mother;
As the rebellious offspring wishes to return home;
As every ‘truth’ must find ‘the yard stick’;

So it is that Protestants must find its Measure!

Indeed, profoundly, yet simply said. 🙂

For one they aren’t idolatry. Tell me was not the Body and Blood of the Lord offered to the Father at the foot of the cross? And third, none of these prayers are offered to goddess Isis.

.

Jesus taught the prayer to St. Faustina and then this prayer is offer to all the world. I don’t think the Divine Mercy is anything different. Even the Gospel is preached in Gospel. Jesus did said, “Be merciful, as your Father in Heaven is merciful.”

The image of the Divine Mercy has a signature that said, “Jesus, I trust in you.” In Psalm 31:14 it reads, “I trust in you, O Lord, I say, you are my God.”

I think for the most part, Edwin. Protestants have a complete misunderstand that praying to saint is a puting them above God. That is a misunderstanding. Rather, when we pray to the saints, we ask them to pray with us to God, as one family.
i do believe now we need more than ever the prayers of the Saints and Angels and Mary for our Church is under umprecedent attacks from all sides. oppositons from the world, protestants and within. Lord remember your Church these days. our suffers we offer to you as we patiently wait for you. amen

I can understand Manny’s frustration. I don’t think he’s talking about nonCatholics that come to the forums and sincerely ask questions, then, when answered, say something like “oh, okay. I don’t agree w/ that, but now I understand why you believe that/pray that way/have that devotion, etc.” Even if they do it several times, w/ different a different question or issue each time.

The ones that annoy the heck out of me (and I’m sure this is who Manny’s speaking of) are the ones that come on and TELL us what we believe and do is unbiblical, and we’re going to hell if we don’t leave the “whore of Babylon” and start following what the bible “clearly” says. Sometimes the things they think we believe are just wrong (like that we worship Mary, or that purgatory is a “second chance” at salvation and/or means Christ’s sacrifice “wasn’t sufficient” to save us), but when someone corrects them (charitably, the first time), they still insist this is what we believe. It’s hard to keep being charitable when they keep repeating falsehoods.

The other thing that totally bugs me is when someone comes on and thinks we’ve never heard these accusations b/f, and can’t understand why we don’t immediately renounce Catholicism, vow to go out that Sunday and join “bible churches”, and thank them profusely for saving us from the evils of “Romanism”. They also seem so astounded that we can refute their claims that they just keep repeating them over and over again 🤷 .

So don’t be so hard on Manny, it’s easy to get tired of all. I also greatly admire Rose’s Christian charity:love: , it’s something I pray for everyday.

In Christ,

Ellen

If you look at my join date, I have been a member for a long time. I think I joind not long after it started. I enjoyed it at first. Then, the hard hearted joined. These are the people who are not here to discuss but to cuss. They don’t want dialog but to be dumb as a log. My God, I sound like Al Sharpton. Anyway, these are the people who Ellen is talking about. And Manny. It made me vanish for a while. I just got sick of how discussion ended in arguement. I understand if you don;t agree. I even understand if you cannot understand. I do not understand why anyone has to be a jerk about it. It almost makes me wonder if they see our point but are too scared to take the next step. Now, I feel bad for those who attack us.

we need to let the Bible do the evangelization for us. for all protestants that have come to the CC came because they studied the Bible for what it is and got converted. Jesus said once no man come to me unless the Father brings him. that says at all.

I know who Jack Chick is, he’s crazy

The statement you made here makes much more sense to me. I agree with you that some extreme Protestants misunderstand liturgical churches so profoundly that their comments are laughable.

“Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee” Luke 1:28, the Angel Gabriel to our Lady
KJV says “Hail” NIV says “Greetings” It’s probably a Greek word that doesn’t translate into English very well. According to Strongs it means rejoice, be glad, joy, hail , greeting , God speed, all hail , joyfully, farewell.

I know I’m being pedantic about this.
“Blessed art thou amng women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb” Luke 1:42, St. Elizabeth to our Lady

“Jesus.” - well, He is the fruit of her womb! 😉
Correct on all three counts
“Holy Mary, Mother of God.” - We call Mary the Mother of God, because Jesus is God, and Mary is the mother of Jesus.
Obviously if she is The Mother of Christ and Christ is God, she is the Mother of God. If not ones christology goes pear shaped. (I know it’s very unprotestant of me to say that, but it is true)
“Pray for us sinners,” - kind of like asking a friend or family member to pray for you
This is when the problem starts. To me it sounds like cosmic telapathy. I wouldn’t get involved with any telapathy

Huh? It’s what the Angel Gabriel said to Mary in the Gospel!!! It isn’t worshipping her!
I never said it was. Some protestants may say it is but I know you are in a better position to make that call than they are. 😛
Are you sure you’re Anglican? I used to be Anglican and we all prayed the Rosary.
Anglicans come in many differant varieties. You were obviously more High Anglican than Low Anglican. Most of us are somewhere in between.
Stop being simplistic. Gabriel says it to her in the Gospel!
I thought it was a greeting of praise…
It means just what it says, odviously.
This is when Calvinists hit the roof! Don’t panic I’m not a Calvinist. As long as we differentiate between prise and worship, I have no problem.
Not because it makes us feel good, but because, if you do it with the proper disposition, it can dispense actual grace. Trust, me, ithas been a great spiritual aid to me when fighting temptation.
OK.
Jesus ruled out vain repetitions, not repetitions. Otherwise, the angels and cherubim in Heaven are going against this teaching, as, for all eternity, saying “holy, holy, holy…”
Amen.
Did it take you that long to figure our little scheme out…? 😛
It took me 30 seconds!

Anyway, why should we leave reach other alone?
I don’t leave my earthly family alone so I’m not leaving my brothers and sisters in Christ alone either.

Code:
Hush! you might cause a witch hunt!

Also, as the objective of this sight is to convert us all to Roman Catholism, you are obviously not leaving us alone.
I thought this was a Catholic site. No one is forcing you to this site, you are welcome here but don’t be surprised when we express and/or defend our Catholic beliefs and faith. If I went to an Anglican site and tried to convert people to Catholicism I could understand your point but not here.

where was this website when I was in college 25 years ago!!??? I went to a “methodist” college, I chose this school as it was in a beautiful location and I figured it said it was a “christian” school, I would NOT have to deal with many of the issues weare all discussingf here. WRONG!

I had two strikes against me: 1. I was from New York (the school was in the south) 2. I was an Orthodox Christian. My freshman roomate immideatly requested another roomate. She said I came from Sodom & Gomorah and she had no idea what an Orthodox Chruistian was, but as soon as she saw my tiny Icon…she said I was headed strait to hell.

(I have a wicked sense of humor) so with my response to her was. 1. I actually live one hour east of Sodom and 2. I thanked her for the directions to hell. With that she moved out and I would spend the next 20 years of my life apologizing for being something others found offensive.

I love all my brothers and sisters of all faiths and ways. I was raised to see everyone through the specticles of Christ. I have resently returned to the church of my heritage. My family came from a city in Greece where Saint Paul literally preached just a few doors down. I am no longer embarressed to say my Patriamone in Greek (which I am learning at the age of 45) and as far as others are concerned…“to each is own” and it dose sadden me how many friends I no longer have…because I chose to “go home.”

I actually never refuse the prayers of saint, angels or humans…I’ll take prayers anyway they come. When Hurricane WILMA came howling at my doors 2 years ago…I had my roasry in one hand my greek icon in the other and kept on singing “nearer my God to thee” as my building swayed…and the door to my home kept trying to push in and consume me…In Christ, Amen

ps…it was at this very school…I first saw a nun on my local cable station…who spoke to me in a way…that has lead me back home. I was also given an record album of a young monk whose music has been the backdrop of my life. 25 years later, I still watch the nuns tv shows, and listen to the same monks CD’s 👍

yes. this is an amazing devotional prayer. since i started praying the Rosary every day I have now peace in my home. Glory to the Almighty God.

Manny, even here - don’t you see that they are motivated out of love when they tell you this? They believe that we are doomed to hell - and while I certainly disagree with them, and while I certainly get very annoyed when I am attacked by protestants and others who don’t share the faith with me, that doesn’t excuse any sulking or attacks coming from me.

How many times should we forgive someone? Seventy times seventy. Do they need to ask us for us to forgive them? No. They don’t even need to know that we are forgiving them.

Yes it is very annoying when people ask you to explain something and then refute your explanations… but perhaps you can also see there that many people are still honestly trying to learn. If they don’t understand your explanation, or they have an objection, you want them to say “Oh I see, I get it now”?

It would be a lie for them to do so, because they don’t get it! Maybe they do want to learn, but they need us to help them get past the misconceptions they’ve been raised with!

Yes!!! Accepting the people does not mean that we accept the lies! Certainly, confront them in their dishonesty. But don’t… don’t attack them, don’t run away and sulk, don’t ignore them.

Maybe they don’t know that they are telling lies; maybe they’ve been told the same lies, and maybe they believe them. Correct them - gently!

Maybe they do know that they are telling lies; still, correct them gently. If for no other reason than that we don’t know who is aware of their misconception and who is not… yet also because even those who purposefully spread lies about the Church might be struck by our loving behavior and realize the shame of what they are doing - and be converted!

I don’t mean to say that you’ve purposely acted with hate, but honestly - if I read over this thread (the entire thing), and I were protestant, I would be convinced by now that you as well as a few other people who’ve been posting here hated me.

I would feel, if anything, pushed away from the Church because I couldn’t get a loving answer to my many questions (when I was converting, I was lucky to have the singly most patient person in the universe answering my questions and objections - I would never have gotten to the Easter Vigil without his loving explanations and gentle guidance).

I would feel discouraged from asking people questions, I would decide to continue hating Marian devotion in my heart (if I had disliked it to start with) but never seek the reason why people practice it, and I would be in a worse place than where I started. I would be too uncomfortable to ask why people do things or to let them know what I had been (mis)taught.

I would be one of those who really would “leave [you] alone with [your] private devotions”, and I would never again ask a question concerning that devotion because I would be too afraid to do so.

Pax Christi,
Esther Rose
Yes i agree with love everyone. what i don’t agree with is that we seem to be explaining ourselves to them all the time. it seems like we owe them explanations about our faith what we believe why we believe. what we do, why we do. when it should be the other way around. it seems like we are letting the protestants take charge put us in a corner and now we find ourselves in the need of explaining ourselves. not me. i don’t play this game.

We are called to explain what we do, why we do, in the hopes that we might lead someone else to understanding and maybe even a newfound faith.

If we don’t explain it, over and over again to each person individually, lovingly, then we aren’t doing our job as Witnesses to the Truth of Christ and the Catholic Church.

Pax Christi,
Esther Rose

I know what you mean Wisdomseeker, but as Esther points out, Truth is not given for ‘us’ only but for all, so that we may all be one!

Sure, there are many who ‘hate’ it just because it comes from Catholics and / or it sounds Catholic. But we must be as tireless as He is patient, for through this Truth, indeed, ALL MAY BE ONE!

Uhmm…did that sound like preaching?? …'bcos I HATE sounding like I’m preaching!
