This is true, 1 tim 4:1-3. The devils teachings that the first church of christ was vanished. Know who is the religion promulgating this teaching? The only two teachins given as a sign who teaches the demonic doctrine hidden in white clothes. Forbidden to eat meat as abstinence. The second teachings by them.

Thank you for this post. We are facing a very difficult time in the Catholic church with the lawsuits etc. Is it normal to expect a man to be without a woman? I have wondered when I read or hear about a priest violating a young man etc are we expecting too much from our priest by not allowing them to be a sexual being and does this lead to serious sexual problems in some of our priest? I think that it is not only possible, but likely that Peter was a widower at the time he knew Jesus. The fact that Jesus cured the mother in law and then she began to wait on them, indicates that she was the lady of the house, not a wife. I have heard that customarily it would have been Peter’s wife’s duty to serve, had she been in the house. Now, of course, she might have been down at the farmer’s market (:)) but with an important guest like Jesus, and with a sick mother as well, I would think that the wife would have been there, if it were at all possible.

I find it interesting that so many people object to this, since Jesus was not married. And, indeed, Jesus says “and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it…”(Mt19:12)… yet, it is still NOT being accepted by so many. If Jesus’ words aren’t enough, there is also the writings of St. Paul. He clearly writes in the Scripture the advantage of being celibate like he was and talks about the difficulty of serving the Lord and a wife. He considered marriage a distraction when serving the Lord. (1 Cor 7:32-35)

By the way, some Eastern Catholic priests can marry. It is in the west where the celibacy is practiced.

A priest is responsible for the spiritual needs of an entire parish within a larger diocese.

If a priest has a wife and children, he needs more money than he is typically going to earn to support them.

A priest is obedient to his bishop which creates a conflict if he has a wife that he owes a certain degree of obedience to as well. Priests can hear confessions and would have to keep secrets from the wife or else break the seal. A man is not supposed to keep secrets from his wife nor a wife from her husband. Where a private secret may be kept, a shared one is often revealed.

A priest has a large family, a family that he can provide for spiritually, but not physically.

Are there fewer or more sex offenders among married verses single men?

There were so called priestesses in ancient times, but these were prostitutes. Any of the holy women who travelled with Jesus could have been ordained by him, but they weren’t. If married clergy are to be allowed, women clergy have to almost certainly be allowed too. Having clergy be both men and women who need to be sexually disciplined and in persona Christi, there would be a great deal of needless struggle. Men and women are only human and can fall after all. If a man is going to become a priest, it is completely reasonable to have him take a vow of celibacy. Even women religious typically take a
lifetime vow of celibacy. Prayer 24x7 and representing Christ on Earth, there is no time to have and care properly for a biological family.

Obama has decided that he can force people against their moral conscience to pay for: abortions, sterilizations, and artificial birth control. This is an egregious overstep where I hope the supreme court will restore freedom of conscience.

There is this dangerous attitude that priests are not “free” to marry and that they should be. This stems from a warped view on what freedom is. True freedom comes from Christ and only Christ. Christ did not establish a legitimate female priesthood and he isn’t. Christ didn’t take a wife. Christ called the Apostles to leave their families in the service of God. Christ reveres women, but He does not expect them to play the same role as men in the church. Christ is a man, so being in persona Christi means that you are a man.

Some speculate that Peter struggled to control his sexual desires. Perhaps this was a spiritual thorn for him. Peter probably left/lost his wife or they at the very least probably
lived celibately during his public ministry which ended when he was crucified. God never gives anyone more than they can handle where the priesthood is a calling and a difficult one at that. Marriage can also be a difficult calling. Why pile difficulties on top of more difficulties? The wisdom of the apostles is to not mix marriage and priesthood, wisdom that has withstood the test of time.

Where there are married clergy, because some are converted Protestant ministers, I don’t know if these priests are permitted to hear confessions. The major point of being a priest is to bring the sacraments, including confession, to a faith community. Celibacy seems like a small price to pay for the priviledge of administering the sacraments.

Pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Pray for our country. Take your pastor out to dinner 👍

It sounds like you are bringing a form of fundamentalist anti-Catholic polemic here, loverofdebates. If you love debate, then it seems counterproductive for you to begin by bearing false witness against your opponent. How does spreading lies create any productive debate?

1 Tim 4:1-3
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will renounce the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared with a hot iron. 3 They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods,

Just to clarify, if you have been led astray by such lies, I will clarify that not only does the CC not “forbid” marriage, but we hold it up as a holy vocation and sacrament. Candidates for the priesthood are NEVER forbidden to marry. During their preparation to enter Holy Orders they freely choose the celibate life, and to make themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom. Those who discern during the formation that they are called to marriage are encouraged to pursue that vocation, with the blessing of the Church. The Church prefers to choose from among those called to give undivided attention to the flock for priests.

With regard to “demand abstinence from foods”, the CC does not do this either. There are no foods from which Catholics are “demanded” to abstain.

As a discipline of fasting at certain times of the year, the faithful are called to abstain from certain foods as a spiritual discipline. When the fasting period is completed, all Catholics enjoy eating all foods, because…

1 Tim 4:3-5
foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by God’s word and by prayer.

So you see, neither of these accusations applies to the CC.

I see on your affiliation that you are a “former Catholic”. It appears that this may have happened because you were not well formed in your faith. I hope you can refrain from calumnies such as this so you can remain on CAF and learn more about what you are missing.

If a man will break his vows it will not matter if the victims are boys, girls, or wives. All wilI become victims of this sin and harm.
have wondered when I read or hear about a priest violating a young man etc are we expecting too much from our priest by not allowing them to be a sexual being
Every human being created is a sexual being. Our sexuality is part of what it is to be human. God calls all of us to bridle our physical passions and live godly and upright lives. Giving in to sexual passion is a temptation that everyone experiences, not just those who have received Holy Orders. This question is no different that saying “Once a man has taken marriage vows, aren’t we expecting too much from them by expecting them not be with other women”?

Those accepting Holy Orders go through YEARS of discernment and spiritual formation. I do agree that formation in managing sexual temptations needs to be part of that preparation. But the Church prefers to choose from among those who have received the gift of celibacy. When one has such a gift, God provides the grace to live out that gift.

Matt 19:11-12
Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone **accept this **who can."

Persons called to celibacy must accept and live the gift.
and does this lead to serious sexual problems in some of our priest? Sandra M
Does asking fathers not to have sex with their sons and daughters cause serious sexual problems?

Does asking men not to have sex with other women after they are married cause serious sexual problems?

I think these questions will help you realize that the logic in your question is faulty. Having sexuality or sexual urges does not “cause” sexual problems. Sexual problems are primarily caused by sin - giving in to temptation, lust, and godlessness. They are thinking problems and moral problems that show their symptoms in sexual behavior.

By the way, some Eastern Catholic priests can marry. It is in the west where the celibacy is practiced.
No, once they receive Holy Orders they do not marry. They may enter the diaconate or priesthood married, but if they become a widower they are expected to remain as such.

The Eastern Church also has much more rigorous disciplines for fasting and abstinence which include sexual relations before Divine Liturgy and during certain seasons of preparation including Lent and Advent.

Bishops are always selected from among the celibate, as their charge is espousing and fathering the Church.

Sandra M
Sandra, what does it mean to you to be a sexual being? All people are sexual beings to me regardless of whether they are celibate or not. Should being a sexual being mean that any sexual conduct outside of the moral law is suddenly permissible? Before asking if there should be an allowance for religious and especially priests to be sexually active with anyone, what is your model for this? Christ is the model for the priesthood. Christ who was not sexually active at any time. Christ told the apostles to give up wives and family in the service of the kingdom. Sexual activity, does it reinforce sexual discipline? Even viewing sexually explicit movies in my experience doesn’t help one do the right thing sexually. I’m not saying that anyone should view such movies by the way as this is a terrible habit and a good way to get addicted to those counterfeits of love that get one into other sexual problem areas. Sadly, sexually inappropriate material has sneaked into a lot of the entertainment and with the Internet it is so easy to find images that are far more harmful to the viewer and anyone who loves or looks up to them.

God put a drive in men to reproduce and physical desire for women. Women desire men on a more emotional level I think. I’m attracted to a women on a physical level as a single man, but I want her to care about me and I want to please her (legitimately mind you) on an emotional/spiritual level. I’m very lonely right now. Does watching sexually explicit movies help with that? No, this just hurts me psychologically and spiritually. Worse, I can relate to real women poorly after adding to my loneliness when I don’t connect socially and want to. There can be a vicious cycle of relating to sexually explicit depictions of women and not being able to connect with actual real life women. This sexually explicit material is not helping me live in a sexually healthy manner. If I can dump the bad news movies… well I’m continuing to try and do this.

Maybe if I can get a handle on what I watch and God calls me to priesthood, I’ll go to a seminary. I don’t think I should marry anyone either though until I get a good handle on this. Our desire for love remember is ultimately our desire for God who loves each and every one of us more than we can be aware of.
Michael

Hello again… Your several post has given me much to think about so I want more of your information to think over this issue please… My main concern is are we expecting too much from our priest? Your posts are educating me and that is what I want and need to stop asking myself this question about priest. More information is all I need and you are kindly providing this for me and thank you. Does the bible teaches all clergy not to marry, yes there is in the bible qoutes better not to marry in order not to divide attentio in serving the church but teaching not to marry as a law is a demonic teaching. The food in other translation is meat. Catholic authority order that in every friday of lenten, all catholics faithful to observe abstinence of eating meat.

Topic, tyia

“celibacy is a discipline, not a dogma” which essentially says to me “because the church says so” but i dont find that answer very convincing or satisfying.
Celibacy as a dicipline means it is a practice the Church approves, endorses and prefers to all other situations. However, there is no church law (dogma) that says you have to be single to serve God. Nevertheless, when a man becomes a priest he volunteers to become celibate of his own free will. While it is true he cannot become a priest if he chooses to marry, it is still a choice. The church believes priests can better serve the faithful if they are totally dedicated to their calling with no other distractions. This is not only good common sense but is supported by scripture (1 Cor 7:1-8). St Paul was not married and he taught that celibacy was preferable to do the work of God if one could commit to it. The Church feels the same way and so it should because it is the living extention of Christ who also remained single and of the teachings of the Apostles like Paul.

We can understand that when we love someone so much we want to live our lives dedicated to the one we love and want to continue to grow strong in that love. Hey this is the love of God we’re talking about. Jesus say to deny oneself and to follow Him. Now I’m married person and know that I can show my love for God through my husband, but I also very strong in my faith and realize that there are those specially called to do more. To live their lives entirely to God and they are able to find peace and joy in that. They were called by God as the scriptures say to become a Priest or Nun. We’re blessed in our religion to have them so knowledgeable about God and scripture and are able to share that with us correctly in the manner in which God intended. From the religious we learn things like Jesus is the bread that we share at the Eucharistic feast and has made a covenant with us in his blood. No other religion teaches or understands that like Catholics do and they miss out on the many many blessings in that. Priests and nuns draw us to the truth because their lives are dedicated to learning and sharing the truth with us which was given to the church by God.

Psalm 110

2 The Lord sends out from Zion
your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your foes.
3 Your people will offer themselves willingly
on the day you lead your forces
on the holy mountains.
From the womb of the morning,
like dew, your youth will come to you.
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

So then Jesus tells priests to lead his flock. That is all very scriptural.

I misspoke. I should have said “can be married”.

On a side note, my understanding is that the Roman Catholic church has accepted married Anglican converts into the priesthood. It is an interesting exception.

thats a good question. frankly this whole celibacy thing is just ridiculous. the eastern church where it is allowed for priests to marry have no scandals.
bring back married priests now!

Marriage doesn’t mean an end all to the problem of preditor ministers. There is a problem in all Christian religions especially in religions where there really isn’t a recording of how things are handled in the individual church communities, or schools, or doctors offices, school locker rooms. I just read a story in the Chicago paper just today of a gynecologist raping a 8 month old pregnant woman in his office among sexual inappropriateness for 8 others. And this happens mostly among married men many of who look at porn in their own homes, and much much less so among Catholic priests statistically which is miniscule in proportion to what’s really going on. So the root of the problem is not celibate priests or unmarried priests, the root of the problem rests in mankind and the people who do these atrocities. It is a deviant act from the norm. And Being celibate does not cause a person to prey on children, that is the act of a being a pedophile, a psychological disorder of someone who preys on children. Pedophiles look to places that they can be with children alone because it is a crime of opportunity and there is no cure, in contrary to what used to be thought, and now we are aware of how bad and widespread it is maybe it’s time to take notice and work on protecting our children in other places as well.

Jesus who is our High priest, never married and fasted in the desert for 40 days just before he was crucified, we can at least give up meat on Friday to pray like him and feel like he felt.

but you have to admit that youd probably feel safer leaving your child unattended with a married men who has an active sex life with his wife. as opposed to this:
meet Harry, Harry is 40 years old and says he has never touched a woman. he also says he LOVES kids. Harry would like to babysit for you this weekend. would you give him a job lol?

and there are many other good reasons why priests should be allowed to marry. look at the dwindling number of vocations. I think it might have something to do with the ban on marriage lol. its unfair to ask someone to choose between priesthood and married life. much more people would like to be priests if they could marry. i for one would like to be a priest, but i want to marry and have children even more.
so this rule has to change in my opinion. the deacon at my church is married and he gives great sermons sometimes, even better than the priests!

No I don’t believe that a man who is married is any more safe with my child than an unmarried man. I won’t be naive. You have discounted all the reasons that the church prefers a unmarried man to represent Christ just so quotas are filled? How about all the negatives that can happen when entire families are involved. How is a priest supposed to go to Sudan and risk his life with a family in tow. Just look at how many priests who wouldn’t be able to go to africa and do the mission of the church to spread the gospel and support people there if they have responsibility to family. Read all the replies for pro rather than the cons and you’ll make sense of it.

A deacon cannot consecrate the eucharist, but can give sermons are invaluable when the priest cannot be there. They can baptize, they can pass consecrated host when the priest is sick. So let them give sermons but I still know that the priest is often better educated on the faith and does a lot of spiritual mentoring for the deacons, has more time available to him to prepare for sermons, pray and such. That’s their lifetime commitment. If you want to fulfill the role of a priest and be married, you may not be able to do it at your full potential because you want to have a family and your family would come first before the duties of the church. It makes common sense spiritually in line with the scriptures and monetarily. Face it, the church could not sustain itself if they had to support priests and their families and have had scandals because of it, that’s why they changed this, and that’s part of the sacrifice one makes to be a priest.
