I would assume that this law was established probably to put down a heresy somewhere down the line that said that if you receive multiple times in a day, it will be to your greater benefit.
I respect the Church’s law on this matter.
But I’m not 100% clear as to why! Anybody know?

Thanks and God Bless!

You can receive communion twice in a day, as long as both times are in the context of a Mass.

that is not how i understand it to be. as i know, you may receive the first time as part of the congregation and the second time ONLY if you are ‘participating’
also for a saturday morning and saturday vigil.

As stated before, one can recieve communion twice in one day, so long as the second time is the context of fully participating in mass.

This rule is in place to protect abuse of the sacrament. Before this occured, places with lots of churches with lots of masses (say, at 10:00 somewhere, at 10:30 somewhere else, an 11:00 somewhere after that, etc.) Had a problem on Sunday mornings where zealous faithful would catch the last 10 minutes of mass to recieve communion, then leave to the next church on their communion list. Then they could get communion 3-5 times. Hey, more sacrament, more grace!

The church, however, recognizes that just as one’s body does not need to eat more then its fill in one sitting, nor does the soul. To commune with Christ in the sacrament is such a powerful, intimate encounter that more then once a day is not needed. Therefore to limit it to TWICE does not lose any grace, but rather promotes a practice which fosters an increased sense of reverence and sacredness for the Eucharist.

Mordacai, you seem to have a misunderstanding as to what “participating” is - when you are part of the congegration, you are participating. If I understand your understanding of “participating” you think that that means you must be an altar server, or a reader, or some such. This is not so. We, the congegration, participate at Mass by being there, making the responses, listening to the Word, being attentive to the Consecration, etc. We do not have to be in the Sanctuary to participate.

I realize that a lot of people have this misunderstanding too, so I am not directing this at you alone, but hoping to educate… 🙂

I work in a Catholic hospital and many times if I catch one of the Sisters giving communion, I too will ask and have never been turned down. I then sometimes go to evening Mass on my way home from work.

And to muddy up the waters even more, you can conceivably receive the Holy Eucharist THREE times in a day. Two times as clarified above, the third being Viaticum (Last Rites).

You can receive twice in a day as long as the second is at a Mass. I got that answer from EWTN.

Oooo 🙂
So basically, a person can go to two Masses and receive twice and that’s fine?
Alright!
Sorry if I was confused 🙂 thanks for the help!
