At the risk of chasing after these red herrings, I wasn’t aware that the truth was to change. If abortion, birth control, and divorce were considered sins 2000 years ago, then why should they be any less sinful today?

OK. We can argue over the Bible all we want. To me, the Bible is the inspired word of God. Note I said inspired. God was inspiration. It does not mean God dictated the Bible. It was the human experiece of God related in a human way which God wanted…

Respectfully, this is the “version” of the Catholic Church.

Also respectfully, most people, even fundamentlist Protestants do not think that God dictated all words in scripture.

To get back to the question of “Why Can’t Women Become Priests?”, my question is why do women want to be priests? Setting aside the fact that church teaching simply doesn’t allow it, I think the issue for many “women priest champions” is they want to do it because the church says they can’t. I think that we all as catholics could do with a little humility. I am a married women with four young children and I am living a vocation that is profound in it’s importance to the christian body of the church. How many saints throughout history, known and unknown, have been lay women fulfilling their sacramental life in marraige for the greater glory of the kingdom of God? How many lay christians, living the single life, have devoted their lives to various charities, and christian causes trying to walk in the footsteps of Christ? How many religious sisters, be they great figures like Mother Theresa or the unknown contemplative in the abscure abby, have changed nations because of public activism or quiet devotion?
The point of all of this, “life”, is to know Him, to serve Him, and to love Him period. How can we do any of these things if we refuse to acknowledge the authority of his bride? Like it or not, “whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven”
Rather than fight for what you perceive as your “rights” why not pray for God’s guidance. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what your true vocation in life is according to His plan for each of you.

marci, I wish this post wasn’t so old, but I just came across it today. To answer your question “Why would women want to be priests?” may have varying reasons, but the core consensus is this. They think they can fix what they percieve as the wrongs of the church. They think it’s a form of seizing power. They think that once they have the power of priesthood they will have the authority to perform same sex marriage. They think they will have the right to debate the church’s 100% anti abortion stance and teach some abortions are ok. They think they will influence their will against the teaching of priestly celebacy and have all clergy get married, because they foolishly think this would be the cure-all of the pedophilia and other scandals that the media has blown way out of proportion. Good idea, inflict a pedophile on a woman, that would fix everything. They think the vestments are a symbol of royal conquest and not what they really are, a symbol of royal servitude. Because they really don’t think, they would realize the term for them would be “priestess” not priest. And I think I may have misspelled a few words. And if anyone who reads this thinks I’m just being hostile and opinionated just think about this. If these women who want to be priests (and everyone who supports that position-male and female-) they already have high profile disrepect for the church. And an even higher disrespect for our Lord Christ Jesus. God bless you.

I’m very confused. Was the sample letter you posted supposed to contradict what I said or was the “Well said” you wrote supposed to agree with what I said? I sometimes wonder, do men in England ever say “Why can’t I be Queen of England?” or do the people say “Why can’t a man be Queen of England?”
