Why can't women simply say "I'm not interested." to men?

I am not really sure why this happens. I think sometimes that when are afraid of hurting the man’s feelings. As for me, if I am not interested, I just tell them. But then again, I am rather up front and frank about my feelings.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but many women have a hard time telling men pursuing them, in black and white, that they are not interested.

**Is it because women are so full of themselves that they think the man is going to be destroyed if she tells him this? **

Why do women think it’s okay to string men along or drop hints about their lack of interest that men are just supposed to “get it” without her saying anything simple and clear?

I don’t think it stems from arrogance at all. I do think it stems from hating to tell anyone that you don’t like them in that way. It’s concern for another person’s feelings, but not stemming from “I’m so wonderful that I’ll crush him.” It can also be hard if the guy is dropping hints, but hasn’t come right out and stated his intentions. It leaves the woman in a position of not knowing whether to actually bring up her lack of interest.

There is the occasional woman I’ve known who I believe does enjoy the game of being pursued, even if uninterested in the pursuer.

Woman can be just as lonely as men.
Sometimes they go out just in case it gets better. It seldom does, but they’re lonely.
Just like men. 🤷

–I hate your teeth.
–I hate your laugh.
–You bore me.
–You creep me out.
–You remind me of my little brother.
–I’m hoping my ex-boyfriend gets back together with me soon.
–I’m asexual
–I’m pregnant
–Etc.
OK! OK! I get it! Sheeeeeesh!

😃

I think there are a number of reasons. I think the biggest reason is that it is hard to confront someone and say outright something that might either not be taken well or may potentially hurt feelings. Rejection is a difficult thing for both parties. Of course, ultimately it is better if one in the party comes right out and says “no I’m not interested.” This is far more respectful and less damaging to the person than awkwardly avoiding them and giving them the cold shoulder. When a woman just avoids and refuses to talk to or confront the man, what she is actually doing, whether she intends it or not, is telling him that he’s not important or that she thinks he’s a creep, etc. I remember a girl doing that to me and I thought, “wow, what a snob” and I felt far more upset at being badly treated than I did when girls did say to me, gently and respectfully, “I’m not interested.” Now at the same time, I have noticed that some of guys try foolishly to hang on for dear life and keep trying rather than moving on… which makes being up-front even more necessary.

Women are told that telling a man she is not interested in him is hurtful and rude.

As a woman who has actually told men, who were not getting the idea from my attempts to use the socially approved responses to indicate my complete lack of interest, that I was not interested, I can tell you that there are men who react to this by assuming that a woman is lying, or that she is just trying to hurt them, or by abandoning all pretense that they care what the woman wants. It can be an unsafe thing to tell a certain sort of man, as it makes it harder to get away from them. It can lead to retribution. It can lead to a violent response. It can lead to harrassment.

In an ideal world, men would approach women and women would approach men in designated situations where both parties knew that the other was inerested in considering relationships. The person asking would very clearly ask “would you like to go on a date to assess whether we are both interested in a relationship together?”, the person asked would respond with either “yes” or “no”, and that would be an end of it.

In the real world, the men who I know would respond safely to “I’m not interested” are also generally the men who are good enough at understanding human communication and social norms, and considerate enough, that it doesn’t really reach the point when a woman would have to say that. Because it’s actually usually pretty obvious when a woman isn’t interested, unless you’ve bought into the romcom idea that a man just has to keep pursuing and harrassing a woman for long enough, ignoring her discomfort, until she changes her answer.

Good points.

To add to the idea of it being obvious if you understand social norms…

“I’m sorry I can’t go to coffee with you on Wednesday. I have to work, but thank you.” Probably not interested.

“I’m sorry I can’t go to coffee with you on Wednesday. I have to work, but maybe another time? I have nothing going on on Saturday. Are you free?” Interested.

Come to think of it, almost every single time I’ve told someone no (that I didn’t know very well), whether it was someone trying to sell me something, a client, or potential date, they’ve treated me like I was rude and mean, even when I made the effort to be as delicate as possible!

That’s not a lot of incentive to be direct.

That is actually a good point. I am very direct and people are shocked at it. Some are pleasantly surprised, but a lot are so use to indirect talk they don’t know how to handle clarity

I am actually a bit perplexed here. Everything you say could be equally applied to men.

Men have a hard time saying no. They actually say ‘I will call you’ implying a yes and then never call thinking the woman should get the hint. At least women never give a yes when they mean no.

These people may then be cases of not being able to take anything **but **“no” for an answer – any maybe not even then.

Being hounded is not much of an incentive to be indirect. So you end up being caught between a rock and a hard place.

It’s a dilemma. In a perfect world, if A asks B and B is not interested, B would decline politely but without any rancour (i.e. no shooting down) and A would withdraw good-naturedly and save face.

Unfortunately, people tend to be involved in the equation, which makes the world less than perfect.

Yeah I think I could take it. I see it as more of a lack of respect when she doesn’t even think that I’m worthy of a clear response. It the soft-no’s that bug me more than the outright no’s.

Good point about not dwelling too much about this and just asking. I’ll do that from now on, who cares about these games. But I’ve been making some progress in getting out of FA-status and certain things women do are bugging me again.
Well, if you ask her out to something and she turns you down (without making an effort to make alternate arrangements or an invitation of her own), and that happens two times in a row, that is a “no.”

What more do you need? If you ask, “Want to go bowling tomorrow night?” and she says, “Oh, I’ve got to descale my coffee machine that night. Sorry!” and then a week later you get a similar response to a similar invitation, what other information do you need?

If she’s interested (and not incredibly shy), she’ll chase back. Just be watching for signs that she is making an effort.

You don’t get to re-wire all of women’s social conditioning just for your convenience. And believe me, you don’t want to hear exactly what every woman you know thinks about you.

Yes.

This is just a general feature of our culture. There are many, many euphemisms in circulation for “I’m not interested,” whether it be in distributing Mary Kay for you, baking cupcakes for the class Valentine’s party, or coming to your party. We are saying “no” all the time, and if we don’t learn how to do that gracefully, our lives will be terrible (and our garages will be full of Mary Kay).

The soft no is not an example of women being uniquely horrible.

Nice, normal, well-brought-up people make an effort to not hurt others’ feelings and to put things in the most gentle and inoffensive way possible. That is not a sign of them being bad people.

A woman who worships the ground you walk on will say “yes!” to almost any outing, even if it’s just to take out the trash.

Why chase women who aren’t interested?

If genuinely 100% of the women you ask out say “no” (and you’ve asked dozens), then it’s time to look at you. There may be some obvious issues with body language, attitude, hygiene, or your selection process that need to be addressed. For instance, if you’re 5’6" and only ask out tall women, that may be a problem. If you look and talk as though women are the enemy (but you want one bad!), that may be a problem. If your physical appearance is untidy and unhygienic, going after carefully made-up women who devote hours every day to their appearance is probably a mistake. Etc. A candid female friend or younger female relative could be very helpful, but I warn you that she may throw out half your clothes.

It may be necessary to work with a therapist.

Some men don’t take no for an answer and react in hostile, if not violent ways.

I’ve intervened on several occasions when men can’t, or won’t take a hint, and I know several ladies who are harassed semi-regularly for turning down advances.

Unfortunately man are socially conditioned to chase and endlessly pursue a girl until she gives a she says the word “no”. Look at every romantic comedy or Nicholas Sparks book; the guy gets a bunch of circuitous responses that could have been taken as a “soft no” but they eventually get together.

I remember my female friends telling each other that they had to make the guy chase them and if didn’t keep trying after they rejected him the first time he wasn’t worth it. That mentality didn’t end in high school either.

Estevao, I don’t know old you are but if you’re in your twenties and still surrounded by socially awkward girls like you’ve described, I think it’s time to find a new set of friends or even a new community.

Or, alternately, they just aren’t interested in Estevao and they mean exactly what they are saying.

Estevao,

I will pray for you that you find a women to spend the rest of your life with. I am, myself, in my early 20’s and I know the difficulties you are facing. Per JP2, as a result of the existence of man’s rational soul and the somatic differences between male and female their arises an element of DUALITY between masculinity and femininity. The unity that we all search for is manifested when male and female become one flesh and than the duality of masculinity and femininity will be in perfect harmony. Sorry for the rambling, I will get to the point. It is FUTILE to try and understand the women as a result of the dual nature I speak of. It just cannot happen. Embrace the masculinity that God has bestowed on you and stop trying to understand women. Lean on the Holy Spirit my friend and you will be fine when discerning your calling to a women.

PS. Duality can be thought of as parallel lines that do not intersect. Something that cannot be reduced and is completely distinct from the other thing.

Or, alternately, they just aren’t interested in Estevao and they mean exactly what they are saying.
But how can they mean “exactly what they are saying” when what they are saying is equivocal and not exact?

When my dad asked out my mom, she didn’t say “no” she said “I have a boy friend”. She didn’t give “hints” to him either that could have told him to keep pursuing. My dad didn’t interrupt that as her not want anything to do with him, because obviously their married and my parents now. 🙂

I’ve had what Estevao has experience, a girl seemingly reject all my advances but then go ask all my friends why I wouldn’t ask her out anymore. She eventually grew-up and told me straight out that she liked me, but at that point I couldn’t take her seriously anymore.

I don’t think it would be wise to imply that all girls think a certain way and that someone should interpret some “signal” as meaning the same thing for every girl. It’s not like you can think if she says X she mean Y and does V wants W.
