I wanted to add that the book we’re using now is called The Profession of Faith: What We Believe
My husband and I are attending them weekly. Very interesting. If your church is doing this, you might consider joining and learn more of our faith.

I wish. My parish can’t even get a decent evening Bible study class together. The DRE won’t participate and isn’t interested enough to respond to my e-mail when I inquired about alternative courses. What he didn’t realize is that I copied that pastor and he wants to know about the response I get from the DRE.

You wouldn’t happened to be in the DFW area?

Aw, i’m sorry. It really is a good program, It runs 6 weeks at a time and then you get some time off. I have learned alot. 🙂 We are just about finished with this 1st book and our next one will be The Celebration of the Christian Mystery: Sacraments which will be 12 sessions, 6 sessions at a time.

No, i’m in the Midland area.

I wish ours would do this as well. Do you have info on Why Catholic? that I could share with our parish?

i think it would especially helpful to parents of children currently in CCD…I know so many people didn’t really get solid Catholic education and they’d like to be able to share with their children but just don’t know how.

We are doing our “Why Catholic?” in two phases.

First is a 6 week lecture series. Father speaks on the CCC every Thursday evening, we have approx 200 people attending. These lecture evenings go through Lent.

After Easter, we will begin the small group discussions - these will go for 6 weeks. Small groups of 10 people will meet and go over the first Why Catholic? book, the same CCC sections that were covered in the lectures. So far 200+ have signed up for small groups, and we expect another hundred more!

We will have our next 6 weeks of lectures/6 weeks of groups in the fall.

This will be a 3 year process for our Parish 👍

One word of advice - from my exposure to it (having attended the facilitators training and on the prep team), this program - as almost any program - is only as orthodox as the leaders. When it has a team of people who have one agenda - adhering to Christ and His Church - it has the makings of a great program.

The only info I have is the one on that link .
Here is a link for the request form.renewintl.org/informationRequestForm.html

You might mention it to your priest that you are interested in it and see what he says. 🙂

Yes. Ours is supposed to last three years. 👍

somehow I missed your link in your first post. My apologizes. 🙂

Is your parish doing weekly classes called Why Catholic? We are in the 2nd session of this.

I belong to a LOTW group at our church and we just finished Profession of Faith** and we are starting Christian Prayer** this week. I would highly recommend these books.

Our diocese strongly suggested that parishes participate in the program diocese wide. However since the diocese is not paying for it a parish can decide not to participate “because of the cost”, when it’s really because of the content, most liberal parishes will not participate.

We are on our third book from Why Catholic.

We break each book into two sessions, each session into 6 nights. One chapter a night for 6 weeks, once in the fall and once in the spring.

It is being used here in our Diocese, but some of the “traditional” parishes (my parish is seems to be pretty traditional, but there are some that think not) are not using it. There is a small controversy within my men’s prayer group over past materials of Renew International. Myself I’m in two groups in my parish that are using WC, one is my men’s prayer group and my wife and I are doing it together in another small group. One of the men in my Men’s Group referred me to this article from Catholic culture catholicculture.org/docs/doc_view.cfm?recnum=1267

Personally I like the small group studies and enjoy the sessions so far and don’t see a problem with *Why Catholic?*Besides what I have read in the article about Renew International has anyone seen any problems with the Why Catholic? materials?

Renew 2000 allowed a leader to direct the focus in any direction they wanted. So it depended on who was leading it. That was the weakness of Renew 2000. It seems to me that Why Catholic? is rooted in the Catechism? Kind of hard to send it in another direction.

Yes, it is rooted in the Catechism. Although our talks might go off in another direction, they are brought back just by looking at the book.

I attended Why Catholic small group sessions in the fall. Our group was kind of lost. We didn’t have any lectures, just small group discussion so maybe that is what we were lacking. The book didn’t seem to do much for us. I don’t remember what it was called – it was blue is all I remember. It did refer to the CCC, but I don’t think it was successful in teaching us about what our Catholic faith teaches. I’m not sure about how the other small groups did. We are now in the second phase during Lent, but I just had a baby so…

We are also running a Lenten series with Fr. Corapi videos. Now those are talks I get a lot out of.

Our parish is participating in Why Catholic; however not everyone has a Catechism for reference and homework. Do the copyright laws apply to copying random paragraphs for use in catechesis or is it only against the law to copy the entire Catechism?

Thanks…

Here are online versions of the CCC
scborromeo.org/ccc.htm Has paragraph numbers in Table of Contents
usccb.org/catechism/text/
christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/ccc.html
vatican.va/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm

Usually if you are not reselling what you using it is legal to copy parts for personal use. But I’m not a copyright lawer.

The small paperback edition of the CCC is really inexpensive at $8.95 a copy

We’re doing it in our parish–im in my first “semester”. We’re doing the sacraments. We’re up to Holy orders next week.👍 I am definitley enjoying learning more about the faith, as well as making new friends in my parish. Def recommended:)

I am in the DFW area! I attend a parish in Plano, and we do have the Why Catholic? program going on. I’ve never actually attended, I know one of the sessions is on Wednesday night when I am teaching ccd, but I’d really like to start attending and am going to go like into the other times. I don’t know where in DFW you are located, but if you are near Plano, you might come and join us!
