John 10:1-10
(The Gospel from the 4th Sunday of Easter)

"1 Amen, amen I say to you: He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4 And when he hath let out his own sheep, he goeth before them: and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5 But a stranger they follow not, but fly from him, because they know not the voice of strangers.

6 This proverb Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke to them. 7 Jesus therefore said to them again: Amen, amen I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not. 9 I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in, and go out, and shall find pastures. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly. "

I was struck by this passage in todays’ Gospel and though to myself “That (verse 5) is why I can’t get into the teachings of Protestantism and other religions. I know my shepherd’s voice.” His truth resonates within my very soul and I respond to that…and no one else.
Pax vobiscum,

I couldn’t agree more with you, CM. Reflecting upon the Gospels, they resonate with the imagery of the Good Shepherd. Our Lord was exactly that, and he was very very protective of his sheep, and often warned them about those wolves that would come claiming to speak in his name (even performing signs and wonders). He even went so far as to pray that we would all remain in the one flock and not go off after “thieves, robbers and strangers”. This is why he left us Peter here on earth, to safeguard his flock, and even prayed for him so that he would “confirm his brethren” in order that Satan not “sift us as wheat” (Lk 22:31-32).

Yes, I also know my Shepherd’s voice…and it resonates from Rome.

Pax vobiscum,

Church Militant, that is beautiful. :crying:

OMgoodness!!! I was thinking that too today…I was like, “Wait, could this apply to Protestants?” Then I heard, “All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not.” and was wondering, “Wait…the Prophets came before Jesus…Did they decieve?” That’s what happens with Bible alone & one’s private interpretation. I’m so glad I have the fullness of the Church to explain this all.

Pax vobiscum,

Hi CM. Praise God, I belong to His flock. He knows my name and I recognize and hear His voice. 👍 God Bless

When I head the Gospel today my first though was that Christ was the gate and JPII was shepherd. The porter (Catholic Church) let the shepherd in by the gate and the sheep (4 million in Rome) knew which voice to follow.
  • just my thoughts

My thought today as I heard this gospel was “there Jesus goes again, explaining what he really meant when he was not understood”. Next thought - it hit me again that Jesus meant what he said in John 6.

Pax vobiscum,
Yes, every voice in our choir is balanced. Not one overpowers the other. The organ is tuned so that the bass doesn’t shake the lamps off the ceilings. The first reading leads into the second reading leads into the Gospel. The Homily reflects the readings. The Homily is about God and not statistics and the secular world. The Homily has a logic; nothing is disjointed.

Now the other – so called ecumenical – prayer service held in the very very fashionable St James Anglican Cathedral in Toronto with the pretext of praying for the conclave – that was another matter.

We were invited from St Michael’s Catholic Cathedral. Nobody at St James knew anything about it even though it was written in their pamphets. The organ recital went on and on eventually making the prayer service very late. The choir was appalling: sounded like a million descants, two basses and nothing inbetween. The organist just loved his bass pedal to the exclusion of everything else.

The readings were incomprehensible and disjointed. The Dean went out of his way to say Roman Catholic at least a coupla dozen times. He started out saying that to ignore the historical reality of papal legitimacy was idiocy. Then proceeded to dismantle the Catholic faith steadily and with a ruthlessness which could only be characterized as nuts.

We are going to have a Reformation the likes of which has not been seen since Luther, he said. Hello? Reality check? With 36 000 denominations in the so-called church the Catholic Church does not need a reformation. The Anglican church, however, does.

Then he has the nerve to say that the only thing the Anglican church has in common with the Catholic Church is a problem with authority. Hsssss. Slither slither.

Pot? Kettle? Mote? Log?

If these were ordinary times, I would just say that the good Dean is simply wrong. But these are times in which the Catholic Church is coming to grips with the death of one of her greatest saints, a doctor of the Church. We are fielding daily idiocy from the MSM and daily attacks from anti-Catholic predators.

The only thing I can say is that I hope the good Dean never stops putting his Gucci shoes in his mouth because every time he flaps his jaw another coterie of converts comes running home to the arms of Mother Church and we are overjoyed to welcome them, descants and all.

My silly two cents,

It is the gospels that I now read through Catholic eyes…the Protestant “blinders” have ran away…I even look for them and can’t seem to find them. And frighteningly, I read through Catholic-esque eyes. SEE HOW YOU PEOPLE CORRUPTED ME!!

😃

CM’s quotes just reminded me of that. You may now return to your regularly scheduled thread.

That just says it all. The voice of my shepherd inside me…

Pax vobiscum,
Yes and the only voice I’m following is Christs Vicar on earth, who was given authority by Christ.:tiphat:

the funny thing is, protestants are the ones who always want to take the bible literally…

anyway, i was curious about the wording of this when i heard it yesterday because it says “all those who came before”…that isnt refering to the prophets, is it?

No…not at all…you have to keep in mind that it was a time of great unrest in Israel and there had been many guys who claimed to have been someone or even the Messiah. You’ll see some of them alluded to in other parts of the NT as well. The Book of Acts in particular.

All I really thought about this is that we (as faithful Catholics) seem to have a deep sense of knowing the voice of our shepherd and that this is one underlying reason that n-C “evangelism” and attack is met with such strong resistance from those of us that actually know what we believe.
Pax vobiscum,

If we know more the Bible, the protestants convert easily, there are too much ignorance.

Isn’t it great that no matter where you are in the Catholic world, you know that everyone else is hearing exactly the same message of the day as you are at Mass!
