For the 2nd time while attend a worship service in a main line Protestant church, I noticed that when the line “the holy catholic church” was read during the Apostles creed, the word “catholic” was changed.
The first time a few years ago they said “the holy universal church”, and then today, in another denomination, they said “the holy Christian church”.
Now I know that the creed has been changed and added to from it’s original form, but my question is, why do these churches today change it?
Are they afraid their members might be confused and think that they are not in the holy catholic church?
Are they forbidden from saying “Catholic” in their services?
Do they feel guilty for the many denominations of Christianity and for not being unified as one church worldwide?
