That’s a good article but it really only seems to deal with the practicality of the rail. There actually is significance in the separation of the sanctuary from the rest of the church.
The nave represents earth and the sanctuary represents heaven. If there is no physical separation, the symbolism is lost. The point is that we must gain entry into heaven; the gates aren’t open to just anyone.
Even still, putting up a rail still won’t solve the problem if the faithful are not properly taught; yet it is thankfully a step in the correct direction, showing that there is more to being up in the sanctuary than being with our pal Jesus.

I agree with this type of irreverence towards our Common Lord. But I do not believe the altar rail to bring it back will matter unless you receive Jesus while you are in the presence of the priest kneeling. Kneeling however may not be the answer. At the Church which I attended in my youth, we all kneel at the Altar rail to receive the Sacrament of the Lord yet in both species. Presently I am at my Orthodox Church (I was raised with a Catholic orientation in my early formation years before I knew I had a Greek Orthodox baptism and now I attend to my local Orthodox Church. I attend now to both Churches) and here we stand as receive Jesus but we must receive Him in the presence of the priest. I do find a better solution for the Catholic Church will be to bring back the Chalice to give to the Congregation as well. Having both species will do its part with its piety and reverence in place. You can receive both species while you are up or kneeling while you are in front of the priest or the Eucharist ministers.

Umm… I found this exceptionally difficult to follow, but you seem to be suggesting that we don’t have both the body and blood available. This couldn’t be further from the truth, both are almost always available to all parishioners who are capable of receiving communion. The only exception being times like now, when there is a very prevalent and rampant flu going around. In times like these, to ensure the health of all the parishioners, the blood is not distributed.
I have never had the pleasure of attending an EF mass, but I do understand the symbolism of the rail, and part of me would really like to see it returned. People at my Church don’t even bow when they approach the altar… It’s a very good, and fairly traditional parish outside of this, but still…

I would love to knee at the altar to receive the blood of our Lord. (I’m allergic to the host. hmph! No fair. I pray that will one day change.)

I moved around the country quite a bit in the last decade and found this is not true. It was true in my home Archdiocese, but as I l moved I found almost all parishes only offer the Eucharist under one species. I think this is the norm in the majority of Parishes.

I wasn’t suggesting that at all. I was only pointing out that the Communon must be received in the presence of the priest. Taking Communion and bringing it with you to your seat is not good practise. I was referring to some abuses that the article was talking about. When I stated both species to be presented I was referring to the fact no person can take this Commuinion wafer to their seat if for instance the Chalice was available to them. They would have to consume the wafer first before they are given the Chalice. In ths scenerio a person would not be able to take the wafer for instance to their seats and then consume it only there. I know the Body of our Lord Jesus is contained within every wafer. I have often received the Lord in this manner. But as the article discusses the problem of abuses I was only thinking of a solution not questioning what is in the Wafer or Chalice. If the rail is to come back it will be good practice if everyone will consume the wafer in front of the priest if these abuses continue to exist.

Yes it is true that certain breads can be allergic to some people. The Orthodox priest at my parish must use a different type of bread when celebrating because some people including his wife is allergic to certain enzymes in certain breads. If you have a problem with certain breads then talk it over with your priest. There my be a bread you are not allergic to and once that is found out he will use it to celebrate it for your need.

To me, this is a matter of strictly personal preference. I don’t feel that there is insufficient reverence in my parish, and feel as though an imposition of architectural means of controlling behavior doesn’t really help to engender reverence if the personal relationship with Jesus Christ is lacking.
The abuses described can be addressed through appropriate catechesis, for example, through the homily. There are Catholics who don’t understand the Eucharist for what it is, and don’t understand the disciplines that go along with receiving it (e.g., examination of conscience), and don’t see the unifying nature of the sacrament (outside of the “One Bread, One Body” hymn we sometimes get from 1 Corinthians).
To me, a communion rail doesn’t solve any of those problems, and actually may do more harm than good in presenting the appearance of reverence where in fact none may exist. That’s a throw-back to pre-Vatican II days, and as a child of post-Vatican II, don’t feel that my relationship with my savior would be enhanced through having to kneel to receive the Eucharist.

I have not been to a latin Mass since I was a child. I was a teen in the seventies, played guitar in folk Masses. I *actually played *Kumbaya at Mass!
That said, I look forward to the time when the altar railings are back, and everyone receives on the tongue from someone who is ordained (Priest or Deacon).
I think the removal of the altar railing and the creation and use (every single Sunday to excess) of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion is a huge factor in the vocations “crisis”, the lack of reverence for the Eucharist, and the lack of belief in most things Catholic by the laity.
That said, I look forward to the time when the altar railings are back, and everyone receives on the tongue from someone who is ordained (Priest or Deacon).

The communion rail was a sign of the sacredness of the sanctuary–no one was permitted in the sanctuary except for the priest and servers.
They took it down so their would be a more closeness to the laity and the priest; however, I do see children nrunning around in the sanctuary which is disrespectful.
The communion on the tongue predisposes the nature of it and its sacredness. However, communion nin the hand should be cautioned if the priest is not watching the person consume it as he could put it in his pant pocket and bring it home,
