Why confess venial sins to a priest?

Hi. I heard that during the beginning of Mass, as we confess our sins to each other, our venial sins are forgiven. If this causes our venial sins to be forgiven, why is it necessary to confess them to a priest? I was just wondering about this. Whenever I need to go to Confession, I try to confess all of my sins anyway. Thank you.
