Why must we go to confession if receiving Jesus takes away our sins? Please help.

Communion forgives venial sins, when properly received.
Confession is the only way to forgive mortal sins, though venial sins are also forgiven in the Confessional. The Sacraments/Sacramentals must be approached with true penitence, humility, and contrite of heart.

Think about this very carefully…you walk to the altar rails to receive The Blessed Eucharist and you have committed a Mortal Sin…in other words you have turned your back on God by an evil action and ergo a refusal to love God albeit temporarily…and you seriously think that this satanic stain will be removed,with no remorse and no forgiveness from God, by receiving the Body of Jesus…how convenient!!..please, please realise how sacriligious this would be…fall into line with the rest of us…go to God and talk to God through the beautiful sacrament of reconciliation…God will forgive when you express your sorrow through absolution by your confessor…and guess what…it’s a wonderful feeling…now compare that to your “method”…honestly, no matter what you have read or heard please take my advice and preserve your sanity…God protect you

Going to confession is a freeing experience. When you come from the confessional knowing your sins are forgiven. That is such an awesome experience. I am confused why so many RC’s don’t go.

Please don’t get me wrong. I posted this thread simply to clear up confusion I had to what extent Communion forgives sins. It DOES seem quite sacrilegious to me that excepting Jesus’s Body would take away a mortal sin.

***So then we ask if Mass and holy Ccommunion has the power to forgive “Veniel” /lesser sins, thriugh the merits of Christ, why not also Mortal sin?
The answer lies in the nature of man and his relationship with God. Certainly God could do this if God so desired. But doing so is an affront to God’s Divine Nature, which must include perfect Justice and fairness.
It is precisely that man is created with a mind, intellect and freewill inorder to right from wrong, in order to know and obey Gods Commands, and in order to love and serve God.
Keep in mind that committing a Mortal sin requires 1. serious matter 2. preknowledge that it will be a Mortal sin 3. and a freewill desire to do it anyway. In other words a willfull saying NO TO GOD!
Because Mortal sin seperates us from the love of God and actually breaks for a time [until repentance and Confession reunite us to God] we are not permitted to receive Holy Communion. [See 1 Cor. 11:27-29]. Such is the way of Divine Justice.***
CCC 1415 "Anyone who desires to receive Christ in Eucharistic communion must be in the state of grace. Anyone aware of having sinned mortally must not receive communion without having received absolution in the sacrament of penance."
So it is not that God lacks the power to do so, rather that Divine Justice does not permit Chrsit to do so.

I’ve never been to confession (yet), can you please tell me what heppens? I might add that of course I am coming from a methodist church, so, formerly we don’t believe that a “Priest” can forgive your sins…

Basically,
- Tell how long it’s been since last confession (in your case, it will be your first confession)
- Tell your sins
- Listen to the advice and penance the priest gives you
- Make the act of contrition
- Come out with a clean soul

Good summary - I’d just add the ‘Act of Contrition’ is a prayer (said aloud in the confessional) expressing your sorrow for your sins. It doesn’t have to be a pre-written one, you can just use your own words and tell God you’re sorry from your heart.
And I’d also add to listen for the words of absolution - ‘I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’. And DO the penance the priest gives you, as soon as you can.

Will the priest pray for you out loud while you are there?
And do priest still give a penance of 50 hail mary’s, ect?

Usually, no. Our priest typically gives me about 10 Hail Mary’s. But they all differ.

When a priest prays for you will he touch you by putting his hand on your shoulder or something like that? My ministers use to do that.

I was a Southern Baptist for 14 years. I went to confession for the first time on 8/8/09. I went in and I have to tell you that yes I was very nervous. I chose to confess anonymously, I went in, I knelt on the kneeler and the priest began “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
I then said “Bless me father for I have sinned, this is my first confession, I accuse myself of these sins…”
It didn’t take very long, because mortal sins are the only ones you have to confess, the priest gave me a penance, I said an act of contrition and then he absolved me of my sins.
It’s just that simple, and let me tell you, I felt totally great that day, and I still do! I will never understand why people would not go into the confessional. It’s such a wonderful thing that God has given us. I don’t have to wonder now if I’ve been forgiven, I heard audibly that I am forgiven!
My advice is if you are conscience of mortal sin, do not hesitate, go immediately.

My penance was scripture reading. Told me to read it twice real slowly and think about it very carefully.

No. There’s a wall a between you and the priest. There’s obviously a small squarish opening thing so that both can be heard, but basically, the priest never, ever looks at you.

…in my parish there are two priest, one is retired. The retired one is Irish and most of the time I can’t understand what he is saying! What then should I do if my confession is with him and I can’t understand him?

Some Catholic Churches have open confessionals. I my church you sit facing the priest and there is no wall between you and the priest. He usually doesn’t touch me, but he will make the sign of the cross as he prays for me. Its a beautiful, touching experience every time that I go. Its truly an act of love…
