Why confession is needed

Seeing as the philosophy section has turned into one big war,I want to get something in.

Now many people seem to think that just feeling sorry or guilty is enough.That is wrong.People need to realize why confession is more important than any sacrifice.It is important because it is the hardest thing to do.Why?It’s because of our pride.We must humble ourselves and tell the priest what we’ve done and beg for forgiveness from God.It is not enough for us to be sorry,it is needed,but it is simply not enough.

I will if you like. Sticking to neisans’ theme of war, for a moment; we can imagine Christianity as one side in a geat war, good against evil. The Christians are the footsoldiers and their creator is their King. Ordered into battle a soldier must be always prepared to go; a fearful or cowardly soldier is not going to enter or last long in battle; the enemy will catch her, or her commanding officier will shoot her for desertion. A good Christian footsoldier is one who is able to do anything asked of her. In this case in order to win the battle against evil the soldier is asked and must be prepared to fight and defeat any evil anywhere, either within the soldier herself or anywhere on the battlefield. If the soldier is afraid to fight the evil attack of the enemy within the soldiers own soul then she is harbouring the enemy within herself, a dangerous act. A good soldier is afraid of nothing but her King. Confession is how her King defeats the evil within His footsoldiers, and the soldiers are not afraid of it.

My war post is an allegory of sorts, the army are the member of His Church on earth and Christ is the King, or head, of the army. Satan and his angels is the enemy of truth.

You wish me to explain it to you; it is based on a previous posters use of the word ‘war’ which inspired an extention of a metaphor to include confession based on the idea of battle as found in our Sacred Scriptures:
The Battle outside the soldier;
Apocalypse 20:7
And when the thousand years shall be finished, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go forth, and seduce the nations, which are over the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, and shall gather them together to battle, the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
The Battle inside the soldier; The Conversion and forgiveness of sins, (confession to all intents and purposes);
Acts Of Apostles 26:18
To open their eyes, that they may be converted from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and a lot among the saints, by the faith that is in me.
And Confession itself, finally, to the King - so they ‘may be saved’ (win the Battle).
James 5:16
Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.

I don’t feel you need to go to confession to be forgiven, I think you should just be able to pray in the privacy of your own home ask for forgiveness that way. Or you can also help by going and telling whomever you hurt that you’re sorry and asking their forgiveness first before praying, or going to a priest if you really want to.

Why would you have to go to a priest for forgiveness when you can take the direct route and ask forgiveness yourself?

With the war bits, I don’t like the “good vs evil” concept because “good” and “evil” is entirely a personal opinion and changes from person to person.

When you say you are “Catholic, it’s complicated”, you really do have some complications there!

People, please get off the war subject. It is derailing the thread over a passing comment made by the OP.
