For the most part, I think the Church is correct, and there’s certainly a compelling idea IMO that it’s not good biologically–for a woman to spend years and years on hormonal treatments (don’t you lot have enough of those already? 🙂 ). There is a lie in society that regulating sex is a completely unreliable contraceptive. It may be more difficult, it may be less reliable than other methods, and it may be problematic for many women, but it can work.

What I find questionable, however, is that contracepting illegally is a mortal sin.
Do you believe masturbation is a mortal sin? Contraception is basically mutual masturbation.

I recently converted from Southern Baptist to Catholic. I must say that this teaching of the Catholic Church is the only one I am still having trouble accepting. The main things that attracted me to the Catholic Church were the fact that beliefs of the Catholic Church are based on the Bible as a whole, not a few verses (like Protestants). However, on this issue, the Catholic Church’s stance is based on a story in Genesis, which can be interpreted a lot of different ways.
I believe a female taking birth control pills is wrong because it can cause many health problems however I do not see how and why a condom would be wrong. I believe that if it is God’s intentions for my wife to get pregnant, a condom is not going to stop that. It will happen because it is God’s will. Additionally, what is the difference in using a condom and having sex intentionally to avoid getting pregnant? You cannot say because there is more of a chance she can become pregnant on days in which she is not ovulating…if the stats are correct about the success of natural family planning.
I am not married yet so I am not practicing either or. I do consistantly pray about the issue and there isn’t a doubt in my mind that if God doesn’t approve he will some how, some way let me know.
I put my emphasis on my belief in this issue on 1 Corinthians Chapter 7 Verses 1-6 and for the simple fact that my wife and I will be one, sex is meant as an act of passion and love between a husband and a wife, not self satisfaction or selfish reasons.
God Bless
