Spooky7272:
A Protestant asked me: “If Mary was sinless, then why didn’t she die on the Cross” I pointed out that Mary wasn’t God. It turns out that this Protestant (and others) believe that the ony requirement Jesus needed to atone for our sins was to be sinless. How do I answer to this? Thanks!
Because she would not have been able to be Our Mediator.
Christ is the perfect Mediator between God and man, because He knows the Mind of God & and the hearts of men - He is experienced in both, at first-hand.
Moreover, He was the High Priest & Sacrifice.
And the Last Adam
And is both the Messianic King & Servant of JHWH.
And He is “the first-born from the dead”. His Resurrection, which is, after all, that of the man Who is God, is the life and cause and motive of our own: so He “had to” be more than we are - more than mortal, more than mere man. A mere Saint is not enough to be all this.
Only One Who is exalted in Glory at the right hand of the Father on high, can humble Himself to the immeasurable shame and disgrace of being crucified for sinful men - only God can span the distance between the utmost height of Divine Glory and the depths of the world of the dead: Jesus did this. Mary, being a creature, cannot fill or span this gap. She is very holy, but she is not the Holy One of God: her Son is. He is sheer Holiness in Person - she is holy by His gift.
His Love for us, is to be measured by the greatness of the difference between Who He is by nature, and what He became for us by grace. St.Paul puts it best:
- Philippians 2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
Philippians 2:6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
*
Philippians 2:7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
*
Philippians 2:8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
*
Philippians 2:9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name,
*
Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
*
Philippians 2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
That is why sinlessness is not enough. Only One Who was that generous and gracious, could show us what the Father is really like, and how vast the love of God really is.
So mere sinlessness does not even begin to be sufficient for what He was sent into the world to do. ##
