Why did Christ have to die?

Why did Jesus Christ have to suffer and die? Why could he not just preach the good news and save and convert people that way. Why was it necessary for him to die and then be resurrected?
 
Dear erothe,

We are dealing with mystery of the highest order here. God could have redeemed us any way He chose. But He decided to redeem us by becoming incarnate, suffering great torture and dying. What is He telling us?

First of all, we get a good insight into the fact that Infinite Love is just that! We are incapable of wrapping our minds around it.

Secondly, we learn that God loves us more than our minds could ever conceive.

Thirdly, this profound reality leaves us to ponder in silence… And well, we should.
