Why did God ban meat, and then make it legal?

Just wondering. Does anyone have some type of Biblical explanation?

Sugar, where does God ‘ban meat’? The Jews did not eat pork (many of them still do not); that is not ‘all meat’. And considering that unless pork is well cooked it can cause severe health problems, for most Jews until the 20th century and things like refrigeration and meat thermometers, it was probably as well that they did abstain!

Similarly, Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays (the universal norm) or on non-Lenten Fridays as a discipline, sacrificing a good thing (meat) out of love. It isn’t a ‘banned thing made legal’.

What about the prohibitions on shellfish, fish without scales, animals with split hooves, etc…?

God had certian rules for the Jews (in their covenant wtih Him), no pork, shellfish etc. They stuck to these rules. After Jesus came and went, he sent out his disciples to preach his message not only to the Jews but to the gentiles. The gentiles ate pork and shellfish etc. Jesus told St. Paul to eat these things and Paul at first refused saying that they are unclean. Jesus told him, I am the new covenant and DO WHAT I SAY.

the Jews were (and are) God’s chosen people, that’s why he created special rules to se them apart from the rest. When Jesus came, his message was meant to save the whole world. It was easier to get people to listen to the apostles messages if they didn’t force a whole bunch of Jewish rules on them. So in essence Jesus was unifying all people with the a new covenant so that we would all be brothers in Him.

Peter was given a vision when he saw all sorts of animals and said, “Lord, I have never eaten a common animal.” The Lord responded, “Do not call what the LORD has made clean for you common.” Basically, the Jews were forbidden (and still are for some reason,) to eat pork and other uncosier (<-however you spell that) animals because they were used as sacrafices to pagan gods. However, it is unecessary for this ban to continue because Christianity marked the end of animal sacrafice.

It was actually Saint Peter in Acts 10:9-16. And it is also in reference to Peter’s bias against gentiles (silly peter). I find him an encouraging story, the guy in the gospels who walked around with a foot in his mouth transformed into the man, who by the power of the Holy Spirit lead the early church. Also, when you look at his epistles or his sermons in Acts we see a man who is theologically sound and very insightful. If God can turn that fishermen into such a great theologian, he can do the same for us! 😃

Peter. right! Sorry 😊 Can I blame it on a long night with the baby?😃

As has been said, meat was never banned, but dietary restrictions were laid on the Jews for special and extraordinary reasons.

However, nothing in the Bible is binding on us as Catholics under the New Covenant of Christ unless God through the Church teaches us that it is. Hence, the dietary restrictions on Jews no longer apply, because God through the Church has not taught us so, and the repeal of this can even be found in the New Testament, as others here have already cited.

The only concern you should have for eating meat is about what may be in it, not that it is meat or was forbidden to the Jews under a covenant which is no longer binding 🙂

I’m sorry but I think I may have to revoke your catholic card for a temporary time. However, because of the family issues I think we can let it slide just this once 😉

It’s not a doctrinal issue, it’s based on obedience to the Church. The Church decided that some form of penance was necessary each week and abstinence from meat on Fridays was the chosen required penance. In 1966 they relaxed that form of penance – though many Catholics still abstain on all Fridays. The Church had already relaxed its fasting and abstaining requirements several times over the centuries.

So it’s not God suddenly making meat “legal,” it’s the Church changing emphasis and relaxing discipline.

Jesus said that no law will ever abolished.
So I think this law still counts but it was never a sin because in the Old Testament if you have eaten some pork for example you not even had to make one scarify to get clean again. For a sin you needed one scarify or has got a punishment.
And only sins can keep you away from the heaven.
So Jesus made it legal because it was already legal, but the people did not kew it.

People commonly misunderstand Matthew 5:17. Jesus said:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is fulfilled.

And what did Jesus come to do? He came to FulFill the law and the prophets. He just didn’t want people to think He’s come to “destroy” them like some heretic.

Jeremiah 31:31-33:

“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
