Some Jewish scholars claim that G-d did NOT choose the Jewish people at first. He first offered His Law to other nations but they refused it. His choice of the Hebrew nation was a last choice, not a first.

Regardless of the validity of this claim (a minority opinion), most groups need someone to guide them, and G-d chose the Jews to guide humanity in the direction of holiness and righteousness through the Law. In other words, the Jewish people have the mission to serve as a model for others. That does NOT mean G-d loves the Jews more than He does the rest of humanity, and it certainly does NOT mean the Jewish people have always kept up their end of the bargain (for the Law is a two-way deal between G-d and the Jews) with respect to practicing moral values. Neither does this relate to any kind of evangelizing on the part of Jews for the purpose of conversion to Judaism. What it does mean is that Jews have a special responsibility to uphold certain moral principles as outlined in the Law and, by doing so, teach others to follow suit.

Seeing as even one group of people with one leader can’t stay united, but has broken into innumerable sects and quarrels, imagine the mayhem that would have ensued if 2 groups chosen by God had met each other.

From a very cynical point of view, you might say they chose God, not the other way around. The actually documented everything about Him in the Torah…doesn’t reduce the majesty of it at all from my standpoint!

I like Meltzerboy’s description.

I also think God had to find a small group, say a really small group such as a man and his wife. He developed a deep relationship first with Abraham and Sarah and through centuries that relationship grew. Those laws that people make fun of on TV? Like not mixing fibers, or no tattoos? I don’t enjoy that mocking of those old ‘laws’. The rest of the world was doing all sorts of things and here was a people willing to follow some rules. Some out of culture, some out of Fear of the Lord.

Because we had some laws then, we have Justice today.

The bulk of humanity was seeped in polytheism and carnality, and He wanted to set some people apart for Himself as an example of what could be. Justice, and Morals, and Mercy are part of that.

Jesus need to come, in which ever people God has chosen. Possibly the people that is hardest to convince?

I imagine it was because of their location, right in the middle of Africa, Europe, Asia, they were best placed for revelation
