Why did God create man ?

hello,

My answer as a muslim , is that God created man to worship him. He doesnt need our worship . But he did . That ws his will.

what is your opinion as a jew or a catholic or a protestant or orthodox or …?

This is my recited reply that I learned in Catholic school from the Dominican Sisters:
God created man to know, love and serve Him in this life so we can be happy with Him in the next. 😃
 
God actually regretted making man as stated in the book of Genesis.

Who could blame him?
 
A lot of folks (aka atheists), believe man created God.

I believe God created humans so he could have creatures with free will who could accept Him and respond to His friendship and love in kind.

I said both, but your poll brings up what I see is an important distinction between Christianity and Islam. We see God as a loving Father to whom we can go as children with respect and honor (worship), but also to live with him as his children. Islam, and my understanding may be biased so feel free to correct me, as I understand it sees Allah more as a master and people as his servants.

. . . . and that is EXACTLY what I am teaching my sixth grade CCD class. We recite it together at every session!
 
I think worship is part of it. I also think that loving him and having a relationship with him is important too. But I don’t think that this really explains the ‘why’ part.

I think a better answer might be that it was good to do so. By creating man, God was essentially sharing himself with others.

We read in the creation account the following passage…
Genesis 2:18:
The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

So if woman created in relation to man gives any indication of God’s motives for humanity created in relationship to God, then it may be said that God was lonely in a sense too.

If so, although perfect from eternity, just as it was not good for Adam to be alone and God created man for woman, it might also be found that it was not good for God to be alone and God therefore created humanity for God-- to be his bride so to speak.

Indeed, in the marriage supper of the lamb we read…
Revelation 21:2:
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

hello Jim,

Well, the reason stated clearly in the Quran is to worship him. But in effect, islam recognizes a loving relationship between the creator and his creations. The reason why worship is very much emphasized on is to always stress that God is supreme and must be obeyed . Some times weak souls can abuse the loving relationship if there is no firmness.

Therefore islam puts the header reason to be worship , but Muslims see and feel the relationshoip through their daily practice.

Meedo, I have a few questions for you. If God is not a loving Father, then why has he chosen to create people through loving relationships between men and women and place them in families where the image of Father is manifested on a human level? If he only wanted obedient servants to do his will and worship him, why go to all the trouble to create this complex world? Why not simply raise all people out of the dust?

Otherwise how do you worship whom you don’t know ?
 
I voted “To love us and have a relationship with us”, though I meant to say “Both of the above.” The relationship He seeks with us is one in which we are worshipful, but I don’t believe He ever divorces it from His love for us. Therefore, if not for my slip of hand, “Both of the above” would’ve been my vote.
 
To know, love and serve God in this world and to share happiness in the next world with Him.

i agree.

It is to share with us His love, and we by free-will choose to love Him and obey Him and serve Him out of love ( ya bunay a3tini qalbak) and not out of obligation. After this momentary journey, to join Him and be in His presence 🙂
 
God made us to know Him, love Him, and serve Him in this world so as to be happy with Him forever in the next.-Baltimore catechism
 
God created man so that we could perform acts of kindness and acts of charity.
 
God is Infinite.

Being INFINITE is sooo cool, that God decided He wanted to share a part of that Infinity.

So, God created man … a finite creation with free will.

HOWEVER, even a tiny portion of Infinity is so enormously powerful, that God decided He had to do some testing of the finite creation to make sure that He (God) would be able to live with His creations for Eternity.

So, God allows His creations (Man) to be tested and evaluated. Those He deems ok, get the passing grade … and after purification in “finishing school” (what we refer to as purgatory) … man gets admitted to what we call Heaven.

Those men who He deems not-ok, get sent to Hell. Which is unfortunate, but they were warned ahead of time and given the resources (the Church) to stay on the straight and narrow …

So… stay in the state of grace.

Pray always and constantly.
