Why did Henry VIII Kill Sir Thomas More?

Righteous indignation, and Righteous Anger are sadly missing in to many Catholics and we are seeing the results.

I am saying that if Holy Mother Church had the power, perhaps Heretics would be a thing of the past. But as we now see, all will play out to the Glory of God unto the final day. Then the four last things: Death, Judgement, Heaven, Hell.

I watched the Tudors over the summer on netflix while doing work. Skipping the parts that were just … there for the you know ‘shock’ of it getting on tv or whatever their reason is. I’ve been debating to get the entire series. I too love … that part of history. I am not at all sure why. It started in university with having to do something on Jane Grey. I also have to admit to reading Philippa Gregory’s books. Even if not at all accurate. I’m a sucker for that time period.

I wonder if Man for All Seasons is still on Netflix? I know it was the summer but never got around to it. Thanks for the suggest of Anne of a 1000 days.

As much as the Tudors had nudity and sexual situations, it played a part in my journey. I always forget to mention this when I speak about how I found the church.

When I saw the beautiful churches and the reverence shown especially by Catherine of Aragon, it touched me. I didn’t know that Catholics like her and Mary could be so on fire for the Catholic faith.

I found CAF soon after that and the rest was history.

The Church has a very appropriate method to punish Heretics, it is called ex-communication. If the official is a priest or a bishop, they are stripped of office. If they profess obedience, they are sometimes called to Rome to learn more about the teachings of the Church. The Church does not espouse capitol punishment for any reason except in extremely rare occasions where the aggressor would be an endangerment to lives even if he were locked up in prison for the rest of his life. (CCC 2267) Pope John Paul II wrote about this in his encyclical “Evangelium Vitae.”
St. Augustine in “Epistle 100” said that we wish to have heretics corrected, not put to death.
St. John Chrysostom in “Homily 46” stated, “To consign a heretic to death is to commit an offense beyond atonement.” As long an there is life, there is the possibility of repentance.
The Church does not want priests or bishops to run for government offices, because they do not want them to be faced with the situation St. Thomas More faced when he executed 4 heretics. If he did not judge someone to be teaching heresies, then people might continue to follow the heretic’s teachings. If he pronounced them heretics and the country’s laws had strict punishments, then the state could use those laws to punish the heretics as they saw fit. This is also why the U.S. Constitution protects religious freedom. As long as a religion is orderly and does no physical harm, people are supposed to be able to live their lives according to their beliefs.

Please try not to focus on the negative comments. As per my post, you would never have to fear that the Catholic Church would ever now or in the future, teach that unbelievers should be put to death.👍 Everyone has a freewill to choose to believe or not believe.🙂 Catholics don’t believe in forcing religion on other people. They just want to be free to practice their own.

Hmm … I think the Jews would (rightly) disagree about your claim that Catholicism is the only religion founded by God. It wasn’t Lucifer or the Angel Moroni who made a covenant with Abraham or appeared to Moses on Sinai, after all.

The fact that the Jews (or some of them) did not become part of the ultimate Messianic fulfillment of that covenant by following Christ doesn’t change the fact of Who founded their religion (and ours which is it’s completion).

St. Thomas More’s execution scene was awesome in that movie. Gave me Goosebumps, with the church bells and everything. Especially when he prayed “Miserere mei Domine, secundum miseratio regnum tuum.”

“The Tudors” was riddled with historical “faction.” As a source for accurate history on Henry VIII it is of little use beyond entertainment value. Not to mention the Irish accent of the actor playing Henry VIII and the slim, youthful appearance until almost the final episode.
I would recommend the BBC production “The Six Wives of Henry VIII.” Far superior on every level.
