What is the significance of Jesus needing to die between two sinners, and what is the significance of seeing three crosses displayed in certain outdoor settings today?
It’s not a matter of Jesus “needing” to die between two sinners. His death could have been accomplished in some other way. The fact that he did die between two criminals points to the shamefulness of the manner in which he was executed and his humility in accepting that. It is also almost a photo negative of the Transfiguration, where Jesus appeared in glory between two saints (cf. Luke 9:28-36, Luke 23:33-43).
