For the longest time, I used to dislike going to confession. I knew confession was important, but I dreaded it. Then, I started attending daily mass. Usually, confession is held a few minutes before Mass. It was difficult at first, but soon, I began to see the value and beauty of it.
Why do we confess our sins to a priest? As Catholics, we are all members of the Body of Christ. Our relationship is not just “God and myself”, it is “God, myself and my neighbor”. When we sin, we do not just hurt our relationship with God, we hurt our relationship with the Body of Christ, which is the Church. “If one part of the body suffers, all part suffers with it.” (1 Corinthians 12: 26) In confession, the priest acts in persona Christi, in the person of Christ. Through his ordination, he is vested with the power to forgive sins. The priest is also a member of the Church. He represents the Body of Christ which we have harmed by our actions. Confession binds what was broken and heals what is wounded. We apologize to God, and to the Body of Christ.
Sin is not something that most people are proud of. Most people will build up barriers and walls to protect their “darkest secrets” so to speak. When we do that, it is very difficult for God to enter into our hearts. Confession breaks down every one of these walls and barriers, letting the graces of God flow into our hearts. It helps bring healing and new growth in our lives.
