Why did Jesus refuse to allow the demons to speak?

Mark 1:24 is just one example of Jesus forbidding “the demons to speak because they knew who He was”.

There are many more examples through the NT of demons and people cautioned by Jesus not to speak about his miracles (is exorcism considered a miracle?).

“and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but He would not let the demons speak because they knew who He was.”

What is the reasoning behind Jesus cautioning against demons and people speaking out about who He was or Who it was that healed them?

This is another question inspired by my NY resolution to re-read the bible. The bible has parts of both testaments; so a little each day.

They were professing Jesus to be Son of God! It wasn’t time yet for that to become public knowledge.

Also, when a demon knows someone’s name, they use that name to take power over that person. Jesus is preventing this from happening and demonstrating His authority over the demons by shutting them up.

I believe Christ didnt want the people listening to the testimony of Demons to His Sonship as a reliable source of authority…

Also lets not forget the LORDS PASSION, that he must suffer for the Kingdoms sake and for us…not everything was revealed to those outside the Kingdom and some things were in parables and hard to understand by even the diciples!

He knew His destiny from the beginning since scripture says, ‘He was slain from the foundation of the World’ and that His death would pay the price for the remission of sins…

Talking is how the demons actuate their evil - lies.
Jesus also mentors for us by demonstrating not to listen to one word of it.

Hi Dona,

One one occassion, he forbade them speaking because it Stopped Him going into the Cities “openly” and was confined to the deserts and surrrounding areas as a result…

This (precept) (in my understanding) however did change after his ressurrection when the Apostles preached in the Name of Jesus as the Christ… likewise many things hidden came to light, one being the transfiguration…

Another reason might be distilled from the following reaction of the people, when at one time they wanted to make Jesus King but Jesus withdrew to the mountain and prayed instead…

So we see from these examples that He came for the Cross and this is paramount. I myself have not yet found anything by the early church fathers regarding this but others might be able to help you… likewise worth checking the catholic encyclopedia …

P.S I would definately consider exorcism a miracle…

Note that Saint Paul also stopped demons from testifying to his power.

16 As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by soothsaying. 17 She followed Paul and us, crying, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul was annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour

Acts 16:16-18 I think it was to keep all demonic influence out of his testimony and to prevent them from gaining any advantage from his work.

…as it was pointed out previously, Jesus did not want to be revealed as God (though there are many circumstances where the Jews distinctly make the notation (“who can forgive sin but God…”) He did not seek notoriaty; similarly, when He was Transfigured He commanded the disciples not to reveal the event till His Resurrection (coincidentally, those who came out of the tombs did not enter into the city till Jesus’ appearance to the disciples) everything was geared to allow Israel (with the exception of the Remnant) to reject Him in order for the Gentiles to receive Him.

The prophecy of the promised Messiah speaks of healing, miracles and the preaching of the Gospel… He was easily recognizable if anyone wanted to know Him; yet, as the Lamb of God, Jesus had to be put to death for the sake of all of humanity–this could only have happened if He were to be seen as one that *called *Himself the Son of God…
