Why did Jesus suffer?

My question may seem very simple to you. But someone asked my today why did Jesus suffer? I was kinda taken off guard. I just replied “I don’t know, it was just God’s plan”. While this is true, it was God’s plan, why did Jesus suffer? Did he suffer because of false accusations by others? Or did he suffer because he loved me? Did he suffer for another reason? Why go through so much pain, wasn’t there an easier way?
