Why did Jesus tell them not to tell?

In Luke’s gospel, Jesus tells those he heals after the healing, not to tell anyone. Why?
Is this related to him telling the disciples (such as at the transfiguration) not to tell until he returned in glory?

He wanted to continue to preach the Gospel. What happened after the leper told everyone after he was healed. Jesus couldn’t travel in the cities anymore.

This brings up a wonderful analogy.
Before the healing, Jesus could travel through the villages and the leper had to hide out away from everyone. After Jesus heals him, the leper could travel through the vilages and Jesus had to avoid them.

Jesus took on our sins…

Along with Notworthy’s fine comments, Jesus also was trying to avoid the people proclaiming him king, as they wanted to do after the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. He knew he was going to be giving his life for the people, for us all. That was his mission, as well as revealing the Father and the Father’s love to us.

Previous posters were right.

In Mark, it is clear that most people were simply “amazed and in awe” of the wondrous things he did. This is great, but they failed to see the true reality of Jesus Christ. They also saw the works, not the person.

In relating a story, don’t you think people would be like “This man, I forget his name, he was rockin’! He healed this man and it was so cool!”

People would flock to see him like some sort of attraction. It would be bad and Jesus’ mission would be brought to a screeching halt by the masses (which is pretty evident at times).

For a more theological interpretation, we can probably read out of the text that what Jesus is stressing is that we need to be converted ourselves. In the language of St. Francis, “preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words.” The idea being, we need to be examples, not mere relators of the Gospel.

Proclaiming the Gospel, in the sense i’m sure Jesus was stressing, would be unnecessary if people truly understood Him and followed him. But instead, people went off and proclaimed what he had done. As a result, when the teachings got hard, many people turned back, “Okay,” they say. “Show’s over. It was fun for awhile but I got work to do.”

Also, remember what happened to Jesus when He finally put on the mantle of King and rode into Jerusalem on the back of an *** (just like Solomon did, during his crowning).

He died five days later. This is why Jesus always squelched announcements of His Kingship, until the timing was right.

Very good observation! I knew that he had to avoid the cities because he didn’t want to be found out, but I didn’t put the pieces together in the situation of the leper.

I’ve been complaining about the Bible study class at my parish. This is the kind of information I’d love to know about. 👍
