Really? That is your response? To commit the most hideous canonical crime of sacrilege against the Sacred Species.

Know you will incur excommunication reserved to the Pope and a sin that deserves condemnation both in time and in eternity.

I’d encourage you not to view our bishops through political lenses. Have you ever met a bishop before or talked to one? I can’t think of any one that I would say is more concerned with politics than the faith and certainly none that are exclusively “leftist”. Bishops cannot be crammed into political categories. If they are doing their job right, they are upholding the good and condemning the bad of both ends of the political spectrum.
 
The FAA banned guns and that left airline pilots defenseless against hijackers on September 11, 2001.
 
You also have a constitutional right to gay marriage according to the gov. Should the Church allow that as well?
 
The Bill of Rights delineates the rights of the people with respect to the Federal Government. It is not a document which delineates rights amongst and between citizens or between citizens and their church.
 
As a priest, I find no occasion for making light in any way concerning throwing away the Blessed Sacrament which I confect, hold in my hands, offer to the Father, and consume…and would die protecting, if necessary.

I have had to rescue the Blessed Sacrament from being absconded and told the person that he would walk past me only by walking over my body. I extracted from him, in spite of his unwillingness, the Sacred Species.
 
When Texas passed Open Carry, I noticed some new signs going up in my parish (Fort Worth diocese) as well. They posted a 30.06 and a 30.07 on the front doors-- no concealed carry, no open carry. A few weeks later, the concealed carry sign disappeared, but the open carry prohibition is still posted. So I was never really sure if the sign got broken, stolen, or what.

Texans with the proper concealed carry license have been able to do concealed carry since 1996. We went back to open carry in 2016, a big chunk of which was for CCL’s to avoid an unintentional “failure to conceal”. However, in both cases, under Texas law, public places (schools, libraries, stores, parks, sporting events, whatever) can post a 30.06 and/or a 30.07 to prohibit people from bringing firearms onto the premises, either concealed or openly carried.

Father, you are right to take offense and speak strongly against sacrilege. In JHC’s defense, I wanted to say that I understood it differently, to “throw out” meaning to abolish or ban the use of alcohol in church, as guns might be banned in church.

Edited to add, in my own defense: It was with this understanding that I responded as I did to JHC’s remark.

The bishop has the right to do so (as already pointed out) and we should obey him if he makes such a decree about guns in churches. It’s more likely that someone would be injured or killed by an accidental shooting with a parishioner’s gun than a mass shooting prevented by an armed parishioner.

However, churches would do well to consider security in this day and age. What does that mean? I’m not sure. Some churches might opt to have a few well-trained, armed security staff. Others might, as now, entrust their security only to the Lord. But it’s a topic that unfortunately needs to be thought about and discussed. Lord have mercy.
 
Yes. Its why some Christian churches forbid wine and use grape juice etc. That’s all I’m saying.
 
It most certainly is not “virtue signaling” and you have no right to accuse the bishop of that.

This conversion is none other than an eccentric one, unique to a hyper-individualistic society with the highest homicide in the developed world. In most places you could ever visit, I’m not sure why such a ban would ever even be spelled out, common sense as it would be not to carry a gun into a Mass, along with relatively few owning one in the first place.

For almost 80 years, the officers and NCOs of the Swiss Guard were armed with Hugo Schmeisser’s very homely Dreyse Model 1907 pistol. This 7-shot .32ACP was ugly but reliable. After the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul in 1981 by a Turkish hitman, the Guard upgraded these handguns to the logical SIG P220, which is standard issue for the Swiss Army. There are also a number of Austrian-made Glock Model 19 9mm pistols used when a more concealable duty weapon is desired, such as on overseas dignitary protection.
