Why did my priest wear a red vestment today?

We are still in Ordinary Time and the color is green. Why did my priest were red today at daily Mass? Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013.

Yes, we are in Ordinary Time but when we celebrate a particular feast day within Ordinary Time the priest and deacon wear the colors of that feast. Today’s feast was the Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr. The color of vestments when celebrating Mass for a martyr is red.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal:

1. The purpose of a variety in the color of the sacred vestments is to give effective expression even outwardly to the specific character of the mysteries of faith being celebrated and to a sense of Christian life’s passage through the course of the liturgical year.

1. As to the color of sacred vestments, the traditional usage is to be retained: namely,
