Jesus’ directive in Matthew 10 was for that time, while he was still alive on Earth; it was not intended to create a perpetual prohibition against going to convert the Gentiles after Jesus’ resurrection. This is why, afterwards, in Mt 28, he commissions them: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.”Matthew 10:5-6, Jesus told his disciples to avoid the Gentile regions and tend to the lost sheep. because Jesus gave those apostles one direction at that time, and he gave Paul another direction when he converted him. One body, many members, many gifts, many vocations. Obviously since the apostles after Pentecost eventually visited many lands preaching and converting, they had a different direction from the Christ, through the Church, at a later time.Matthew 10:5-6, Jesus told his disciples to avoid the Gentile regions and tend to the lost sheep. Perhaps Paul concluded the Jews were in total denial. Considering all Christs miracles and good deeds the powers that be still conspired to kill him. Paul knew the score, he was there and heard St Stephans amazing and truthful final indictment before he was stoned to death.
Then again, maybe he didn’t want to step on the feet of the original disciples. He’s written on how’s he’s disagreed with Peter over a few things. As an educated man it’s possible he could see a personality conflict with Peter. Consequently he wanted to follow up on his own ideas on spreading the word.
Not to derail the topic but imo Peter the rock, did have some issues.

We find a similar contradiction early in Luke 9:3 when Jesus sent his disciples forth,
