Why did Pope John Paul II kiss the Koran?

I’m a protestant who has a tremendous amount of respect for Pope John Paul II.

My respect for him is based on secular reasons (his fight against communism and his role in bringing it down). I know nothing of his theology.

I am bothered by his kissing the Koran. The Koran contains terrible accusations against Christianity and Christians.

Why did JPII kiss and bless this book?
