To the OP:
I would say the Holy Father John Paul II, in his desire for reaching out to non-Christian faiths in good will and in a desire to reconcile with Muslims with whom we’ve had much conflict and bad relations for centuries, he made a HUGE P.R. disaster as well as a horrible error in judgment as other posters have said. It was more of a sign of respect for the people and their religion but it came across as an adoration or a deep love for a holy book that rejects the truth of Christ and our God. It was bad, period. That’s why popes are not impeccable, they’re infallible. He screwed up.
Regarding the OP’s statement about Obama…wasn’t it the Emperor of Japan to whom he bowed, not Saudi Arabia? I don’t see why people are slamming the President for this. It was a sign of respect for the leader of a foreign nation. I happen to like the humility and desire to be respectful to our fellow nations. George W. Bush walked around with Saudi royals holding hands with them, embracing them, George HW Bush bowed to foreign kings, Nixon bowed to the same, Clinton did, Eisenhower did, on and on…yet for some reason Obama is the unpatriotic heretic. I don’t get it. It’s a gesture of respect, not subjugation and worship. To me it’s a no-brainer. The Dick Chaney “Americans don’t bow to anyone!” arrogance it what bugs me…

This has been debated for years now. The fact is, John Paul II did not kiss the Koran, but the Assyrian Bible as used in the Christian Church in Iraq. Some continue to insist that it was the Koran. Go figure. I am not responsible for their positions.

Does anyone know if this is true!!! I would love it if it were because I have had friends ask this question… why did the Pope kiss the Quran? I’d love to be able to say he kissed the Bible.

The picture was of Pope Paul II in the company of Patriarch Raphael I of Iraq who presented him with a copy of the Holy Bible written in Arabic when he visited the Vatican in 1999. Both sedavacanists and anti-Catholics jumped on the bandwagon accusing the Holy Father of kissing the Q’uran, which was both ignorant and untrue. By the very fact that Raphael I is with the pope and the pope, in the picture, is kissing the Holy Bible, tells the whole story. I even argued with some poster who insisted that Raphael I was a Muslim! This shows the extent of the ignorance which exists.
I tried to copy the pic and place it in this posting, but it won’t allow it.
Try Googling “Pope kissing the Koran” and you will find several sites with the picture. Again, the picture is of Pope John Paul II and Patriarch Raphael I of Iraq who presented the Holy Father with the Holy Bible printed in Arabic. It’s as simple as that.

Yeah, this is the first I’ve heard that it was definitely not a Qur’an (or that it was a Syriac Bible). Please present some evidence. The Chaldean Patriarch was there and is speaking as a first-hand witness.
