Why did the Roman Missal change the titles of certain days?

I noticed that some of the titles of certain feast days/solemnities/services are changed. For example:

Thursday of the Lord’s Supper: At the Evening Mass
Friday of the Passion of the Lord
The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

So, why were some titles changed in their wording? Was there a specific purpose for changing them?

I don’t know exactly. The names of some of these days have been in flux for some years now.

My guess is that there are two main reasons: 1) to have the names reflect the Latin more closely; and 2) to make the English more meaningful.

For years I’ve thought that some of the titles for the days in Holy Week were rather awkward…

I also think some of the titles refer specifically to a particular Liturgy/Mass on a particular day, not to the feast/solemnity itself.

To match the Latin (sometimes awkwardly, as “Universorum” doesn’t quite mean “of the Universe”).

Feria V in Cena Domini: Ad Missam vespertinam

Friday of the Passion of the Lord
Feria VI in Passione Domini

The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night
Vigilia Paschalis in Nocte Sancta

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Domini Nostri Iesu Christi Universorum Regis

Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God
Sollemnitas Sanctae Dei Genitricis Mariae
