I understand why Mary had to be free from sin—so she could be the perfect vessel for Jesus to live in for nine months. But why didn’t Mary have a sinless mother to carry her?

Mary wasn’t sinless by nature but by God’s intervening grace at the first instant of her immaculate conception. Mary’s mother, Ann, conceived and bore a human creature. Mary, on the other hand, conceived and bore the holy Son of God (Lk 1:35). Mary was pledged to Christ from the womb to be a worthy mother.

Her sinlessness wasn’t a requirement, but an honor.
For her own mother to be sinless was also not a necessity.

This explains the angel Gabriel’s greeting

Hail, full of grace
