Hebrew scholar Savinah Teubal wrote a delightful book misnamed Sarah the Priestess (Her publisher thought “priestess” was spicier than the office of the EN, the "woman of grace; and would generate higher sales). The short explanation is the ancient world went wild over the Woman & Seed mandate in Genesis 3:15 and skewed all towards the EN, the office of “queen” or “woman of grace.” This the Blessed Virgin Mary “full of grace” fulfills (and widens as "blessed among women). So they had the importance of it right.
Lineage was accounted through the woman only, just as Hebrews do today. So Sarah and Abraham were not considered related at all because, even though they had the same dad, they had different mothers! Something like this is hinted at with the bones of females lovingly interred at Machu Picchu whereas the bones of males were thrown into a charnel house. To be the male ruler, one married the EN, the Woman of Grace, the queen–not opposite of the heterodox culture’s kingship.
Teubal gives a review of ancient law, which allowed for a female to give her handmaid to her husband to raise up seed to herself. This is Sarah’s show. Teubal further explains the nature of the scrap with her handmaid, Hagar, and her son with Abraham, Ishmael, as including teasing having sexual overtones. A handmaid’s child had full adoption rights and could never be un-adopted. So Sarah demoted Hagar to servant and booted her out. Clever Virgin Mary to assent as “handmaid” of the Lord to insure her Son would have full rights of sonship.
The giving of a handmaid to raise up seed to herself is initiated by the EN/Woman of Grace/queen, so what today’s moderns see as polygamy had its roots in law that opened up options for sterile women, not randy men. Then as the Woman & Seed system was actively overthrown or attenuated by the heterodox kingship system, kings kept their bases covered by marrying EN’s to give street cred to their rulership. These two factors shaped polygamy.
God did ratify the Woman & Seed system by upholding inheritance by the youngest, as seen in the likes of Jacob and Esau. Though twins, Esau was born first and of course Isaac inherited, this through the wily strategem of Rachel, (ratified by God). Rachel also hid the “little idols” of her dad which were actually little land titles with her mom’s visage because land was passed through the Woman of Grace. This transitional time seems confusing but to dad they were idols, to Rachel they were land titles snitched by dad that should have gone to her. Lots of legal stuff here. As Teubal illustrates, the Woman & Seed system was/is hiding in plain sight. As a Jew, Teubal was understandably less than excited to consider the Virgin Mary fulfills this EN-ship as having been titled “Full of Grace.”
