It seems to me that there are a lot of people who have trouble accepting the words of Jesus because they come second hand. I wonder why Jesus didn’t write a book. The answer seems like it is quite simple, but it eludes me for the time being.

because he didn’t come to write a book. He came to bring salvation and open the gates of Heaven, thank God for that! But then he also instituted a Church, that was given special privilege to teach his Word, spoken and written, to the rest of the world for all eternity until his coming, without error.

1 Jesus wrote nothing, Mohammed wrote nothing, the Buddha wrote nothing. None of them seems to have had a problem founding a major world religion.

2 Would a carpenter from Galilee have been able to write in the first place? At that time and place writing was not a common skill. The ‘scribes’ were the ones who could write and they had their own special category different from the general population.

The lack of direct writings from Christ also calls us more deeply into our Faith. Of course there are those who would STILL not believe, even if authentic writings turned up tomorrow  but the lack of them calls us to deepen our Faith in Christ and in His Church.

Jesus as Son of God didn’t need to write a book. Books are written about Him. Why? Because of His greatness, His message, His miracles, His teaching, His Crucifxion, His resurrection, etc…

St John says - no book could contain all He said and did.

Jesus was the word.

**Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God. **

He read from the scroll in the synagogue. Why do you think he couldn’t also write?

It’s not as simple as you make it sound. Remember there were no “books” back then. Writing on papyrus with a reed and ink was an extremely time consuming task, even for the smallest letter. Jesus’ ministry lasted only 3 years, he did not have time to waste. But he promised his disciples the Holy Spirit to help them remember and understand his words. That promise makes their writing as good as writing from Jesus.

This is what God willed for the NT books.

Reading and writing are two different skills. As has been pointed out, the material to write on is not easy to aquire in the absence of paper. Much ancient writing is in very short pieces on bits of broken pottery, seals or short stone inscriptions. None are good materials for composing a book. Reading may well have been fairly widespread, but the ability and opportunity to write a book were much more limited. There was a separate group of ‘scribes’, there was not a separate group of ‘readers’.

Reading and writing are two different skills.
i dont know about this one, i can read and write in spanish, better than i can speak it, but no one ever taught me how to write, they just taught me how to read.

further, i can read and write to some degree portuguese, and italian, though not as well,

indeed with my small knowledge of english and spanish, i can puzzle out the meanings in the written forms of german, swiss, french, other members of that language group.

i think if one can read a langauge one can write it, isnt it just a matter of copying the letters?

When we have so many witness for Christ, some people still doubts about what Jesus had done for us. Could you imagine if Jesus wrote the entire Bible Himself - people could even say “He made all that up”.

With us, we seem to ask for witness in so many events, Jesus gave us witnesses by allowing others to write about His Life and Mission.

This is only a thought; Jesus worked in miraculous ways.

Jesus could apparently write as well as read - he was writing something on the ground after the woman was taken in adultery.

Well, He sort of did; the Truths of Bible were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Other than that;
Why would He need a book when so many have been written about Him?
Why would He need a book when the blood of people willing to die for Him has been speaking so eloquently for 2000 years?
Why would He need a book when direct action of the Holy Spirit inspires belief?
Why would He need a book when the most illiterate as well as the most highly educated can have a
direct experience of Him?

Good point! I believe this was the simple answer that eluded me. Thank you all for you post.

A reason other than the ones already offered is that a book is static. The Church, as the body of Christ, is alive and needs a “living” Word, not a static one.
