Sounds a lot like Divine Mercy Sunday in the Catholic religion. Very interesting.A High Holy day. The Day of Atonement.
In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and you shall not do any work … For on that day he shall provide atonement for you to cleanse you from all your sins before the Adonai. -Leviticus 16:29-30
On Rosh Hashana (the New Year) God inscribes our name in the books of life and death. (who will live and who will die in the coming year). On Yom Kippur, that judgment is sealed. There are 10 days between the two. We have those ten days to appeal to God, make amends, etc. in order to change the judgment.
It is a day of atonement for sins committed against God, not each other. In order to be forgiven for sins against another, you need to apologize to that person and make restitution etc. before the books are sealed.
On that day we refrain from engaging in any life affirming activities, such as eating, drinking, sex, bathing, etc. In effect, we are rehersing our deaths.
That’s the thumbnail on Yom Kippur.

There was a complicated series of rituals, including sacrifice on behalf of all the Jews and the priest, that is correct.Valke please correct me if I’m wrong…
On Yom Kippur, the Jewish High Priest would make a sacrifice for the atonement of sins, both his and the sins of the people. The sacrifice was done outside the holy of holies in the temple. Then in a second step, the priest would take the sacrifice inside the holy of holies and offer the sacrifice to God. And the sacrifice would also be consumed (a requirement so it seems).
