Why didn't the Jews accept Jesus?

I have long wondered why the Jews didn’t accept Jesus – I’m reading a book about Edith Stein and her Jewish family were very upset when she became a Catholic and more upset when she went into the Carmelite order. Of course, the first Catholics were Jews – Peter, Paul, etc., etc. – just wondered.
